If you can live, not for your pleasure only,

To warm the hearts of those whose lives are lonely
    And help to make their world a better place;

If you can balance dreams with practicality

    However difficult that task may be;

If you can temper facts with understanding
And seek to gently guide, not to control,
And neither be too lax nor too demanding,
But keep in mind the worth of every soul...

If you can strive, not caring who gets credit,
And work at building bridges, and not walls,
Or hearing idle slander, just forget it
    And never fail to help someone who falls;

If you can give your help without begrudging
The patience, time and effort you impart,
Or look at others' weakness without judging
    And see, not with your eyes, but with your heart;

If you can take resources that surround you
And use them in the way you feel you should,
You'll be a woman...and all those around you
Will be the richer for your womanhood!

Baby Steps - Part One (38 weeks and counting)

A thousand miles, a single step
An epic trip, nights to forget
This nascent soul we brought to life
Is in the post, we’re terrified

We wait, the due date ringed in red
Bags in the hall, cot by the bed
Nursery in green (we want a surprise)
We’ll sure get that, gender aside

The books and classes duly done
In one ear, out the other one
The list is done, she’s fit to pop
It’s coming soon, ready or not

Advice dispatched, “it worked for me”
    The judging mums, horror stories
    Outweighed by friends who understand
    Grandmas-to-be sit on their hands

And so do we, what can we do?
See out these days with just we two
Prepare the nest, agree the name

That is fabulous news OOP, and quite a special poem to celebrate. It will be a wonderful time and I'm sure you'll have chance to keep all is important to you too. It just takes a while for the balance to settle. When volunteering for late night feeds is the perfect time for browsing and writing. Best of luck to you both.

Very good, but that works for blokes too. (apart from the last two lines!)

    Re: Today's poet

Hes , love this poem .... just the smallest amount of words , speaking volume's .

    Portrait

    I draw you, so,
in the empty air before me.
    The thin line goes unbrokenly
till it joins itself again and completes
    the lineaments
    of my ungratified desire.

P.S For some reason , my computer will not let me reply to a post , with the bubble .......

    Re: Today's poet

    A lovely poem , with hope ....

Between Us Now by Thomas Hardy

    Between us now and here--
    Two thrown together
Who are not wont to wear
    Life's flushest feather--

Who see the scenes slide past,
    The daytimes dimming fast,
Let there be truth at last,
    Even if despair.

    So thoroughly and long
    Have you now known me,
So real in faith and strong
    Have I now shown me,
    That nothing needs disguise
    Further in any wise,
    Or asks or justifies
    A guarded tongue.

    Face unto face, then, say,
    Eyes my own meeting,
    Is your heart far away,
    Or with mine beating?
When false things are brought low,
And swift things have grown slow,
    Feigning like froth shall go,
    Faith be for aye.

This is really beautiful OOP, I found myself feeling quite moved whilst reading it and it brought back a few memories of my first pregnancy...I think your observations are spot on especially about other people's (at times unhelpful) reactions...but I think there is also something so wonderful about babies that also brings out a certain benigness in folk...wishing you lots of luck, enjoy your journey into parenthood with all that brings!
