    Digital Camera

My last one I won at Race the Train many years ago. It worked well until I broke it. It had a good memory, was reliable and travelled to many places with me. Since it died last year I have been without one and used my work camera and family members cameras to get by. The time has come to invest in a new one. Anyone know anything about recent models or a good buy? Was looking to pay up to £200 and from what I can work out should easily be able to get a good 7MP camera for this price. Looked in What Digital Camera mag in WHSmiths this afternoon (Mainly as a rest between dodging old people) but that just confused me. Any help gratefully received.

Depends on what you want it for and how big. Digital cameras that look like ordinary cameras (big ones) often take good piccies and are more flexible with settings, e.g. fast shutter for races. But they are so big you tend not to have them with you. Often people buy the big camera for settings flexibility then leave it on auto all the time anyway. The compact digital cameras lack that flexibility but fit in a bum bag and are pretty damn good.

I rate the Canon Ixus (and I work for another camera company, not Canon). Got my daughter one (Ixus 60) for her 18th B'day and it takes great pics, fits in her handbag and she loves it. We went to currys to look at it first, then bought from amazon on line for about £40 less. The newer Ixus 70 looks pretty good. Get your memory card from Amazon too as they are a fraction of the high street price.

A good way to get user reviews and ideas is:

    - go to www.amazon.co.uk
    - go to digital camera section
    - select £100 - 200
    - top right - sort by av customer review and then best selling

This link might do it for you if it works

I've got a Sony Ericsson something or other mobile phone with a 3.2mp camera and that takes quite good snaps. It depends what you want the camera for but there are some good digital slr cameras available now at around £400.

I've just bought an Olympus SP-510UZ (where do they get these names from?) and it's great. 10x optical zoom, 7.1 megapixels, decent-sized screen and a proper viewfinder as well, which I couldn't do without. All that waving the camera around two foot from your face is useful in certain situations, but I like being able to look through it like a normal person... Mine cost me a hundred and fity quid, reduced from something close to twice that, but I bet you could get one cheapish online. Also, one of my relatives has got the SP-500Z, which is the older version and very similar, so that's worth looking out for as well.

I hope you get a goodun, whatever you go for.

Never heard of it - it wasn't me! I've got a Sony DSC-S600, which has served me pretty well. It's a damn sight better than the crap that I paid 3 times the price for a year earlier!

Interestingly, I've just checked on Amazon, and it's gone up from the £114 that I paid to £144!

We ended up getting a Samsung NV3. £149 after having £30 reduced off it from Currys in the Trafford Centre. 2gb memory card for £35 as well seemed expensive but wanted the card there and then to start using it.

Decided on this one, not because it has 7.2 mega pixals or a £x optical zoom, but because it looked very nice!!!!
