Which bits of the route go over private land? On the website it says don't do recces as much of the course is over private land, but on he OS map it's all yellow, which as far as I'm aware means that the general public can use it. Obviously sticking to paths, following the country code etc, but it is open for access, innit?
Yes. I have often thought this. Before the CROW legislation I could understand them requesting this, but not now. I have emailed them to this effect. Let's see if I get a reply.
i don't know the answer to this but if it's access you should be ok, however some landowners are a bit twitchy of big groups running over there land esp on the run up to nesting time, this may be one of the reasons the RO's have asked you not to reccie the route.Originally Posted by Dog Breath
It's a bit counter-productive though, saying not to go 'cos it's private land when it obviously isn't, in the sense that you do have a right to be there. If it's about nesting birds why not say so, and give out general areas which it would be appreciated that we avoid; after all, wanting to protect the birds is every bit as valid a reason (as saying it's 'private land') to avoid certain areas.
I seem to remember in last years booklet it gave instructions for the race/event to miss particular fields on the decent from Whernside to Kingsdale and Kingsdale and provided GRs for stiles that were to be crossed due to some fields not having access rights from the land owners. Not that anyone paid any attention to it on the day as there were runners all over the place clambering over walls and fences as they saw fit.
aye, there's a definite point on the Whernside ridge where a temporary style is (usually!) provided, and the bit after Dodd Fell over to Fleet Moss has a clearly marked path to follow which is quite often ignored, and results in people clambering over a couple of walls. Could be that bit!

Starting to get properly excited now as it all seems more real.

...also in the new booklet it specifies the route to take off Buckden Pike, which I don't think it did before. Not the way I'd have picked, either!
Anyone got any good route suggestions, especially across Fleet Moss.... Looking at going out there over the bank holiday ...
I went around the right hand side last week. Bit boggy but nowt to worry about. Middle tongue was boggy.
