If it looks like a lizard and sounds like a lizard, then it probably is a lizard.

well. that settles it. probably/sounds/looks like a lizard wins the vote. It Was a lizard.
never seen lizards up ere before! But yr very persuasive comments force me to have no doubt it was a lizard.
    thanks guys

on the subject of wildlife, and being too lazy to trawl through the 137 pages on this thread (for which I apologise)....can anyone recommend a good, comprehensive wildlife book which is just on stuff you find in Derbyshire/High Peak? Don't mind if it includes flora and fauna too, in fact that'd be a bonus.

Common lizard. Had a few sightings over the years but they are quick. Last one my daughter spotted a couple of weeks ago when we were between Shelf Moor trig and Hern Stones.

Two quiet common lizards, a hare, two meadow pipit nests with 5 eggs in each and two foxes on the Howgills on Sunday.

Cyclops: 'Regional Wildlife Peak District' by Paul Sterry. Maybe not comprehensive but it's pretty good. If you can't find a copy let me know and I'll pass mine onto a Glossopdale Harrier for you to have a butcher's at.
