    Re: Today's poet

I read this poem last night , but didn't have chance to comment !
I have to admit , I immediately drew parallels ( in parts ) to a past relationship I had , which I would compare to the spaghettification process that takes place when any object is pulled into a black hole !
I really like this poem though , certainly got me thinking about how I would adapt it !

    Stardust (Created in the Furnace.)

You and i born in the first moments of creation,
Cast out of the furnace that is our mothers heart,
    Doubling,multiplying floating free,
    Soaring through the ether.

Time moves on we intertwine with myriad diversity,
Eternal without end to be born and born again,
Realisation to all of our immortality bring joy,
We will never die we are children of the stars.

    Nathaniel Lee.

Just as a note to this poem. Our component parts were made in the Big Bang and they have been constantly rearranging themselves for 13.7 Billion years approx. In a very real sense we are immortal we do carry on existing as we always have. We are Star Children and we are made of Stardust and are destined to see the universe until its end. I personally think this is a beautiful thought.

    ever and only

Be with me ever and only,
    No other in thought with you;
    Only without me lonely,
    Ever in this way true.
So will I be yours only,
    Whatever I dream or do,
    Only without you lonely,
    Ever in this way true.

Nathaniel , I liked the second poem you posted , especially as you wrote it yourself ...... your posts ( their themes ) always make me think of the two things that to me are what the word ' awe ' defines , the universe and love ..........
Only a year ago I always thought they were both equal , until I read a quote by Frank Ramsey ( cambridge philosopher ) which gave me a new perspective - which I'm posting as I think it's very poetic in itself !

"Where I seem to differ from my friends is in attaching little importance to physical size. I don't feel in the least humble before the vastness of the heavens. The stars may be large, but they cannot think or love ; and these are qualities which impress me far more than size does. I take no credit for nearly seventeen stone. My picture of the world is is drawn in perspective , and not like a model to scale. The foreground is occupied by human beings and the stars are all as small as threepenny bits "

Hes , I love the poem you posted above ' Ever and Only ' ....

It had me , from the moment I read the title ! x

    Think Of The Unsatisfied Ones

    When despair—
    you who enjoyed great triumphs
and walked with confidence and the memory
of many gifts of delirium and dawns
    and unexpected
    turns—
when despair wants you in its grip,
and threatens you from some unfathomable depth
    with destruction
and the guttering out of your flame:
then think of the unsatisfied ones,

with their migraine-prone temples and introverted dispositions,
    loyal to a few memories
    that held out little hope,
    who still bought flowers,
and with a smile of not much luminosity
    confided secret desires
    to their small-scale heavens
that were soon to be extinguished.

    Re: Today's poet

Hi Machgirl, glad you liked the poem.

I found your quote really interesting. I think love is the most important thing in life but I also like to locate myself within vast landscapes, such as deserts, oceans, moorlands & plains, when they are practically devoid of people because they make me feel very small and insignificant and put everything in perspective. I think when faced with an awe-inspiring ageless landscape, I feel comforted. I have been thinking about it and I wonder if it is to do with the fact that I could be in any era and that it makes me think that I am just one in a long line of beings that have and will stand at that point. The world keeps on turning.

It has! I think it will become a bit more active as the nights draw in. I like to think the decrease in postings is because everyone is out and about running, spending time with loved ones or just enjoying life. I reckon there'll always be a few of us around to keep it going though and its nice to see you back.

    Re: Today's poet

I've been facing a few fears lately on various different levels and have been trying to find poems that sum up those feelings. Not sure that this does but I like it:

    Fear

The host, he says that all is well
    And the fire-wood glow is bright;
The food has a warm and tempting smell,—
But on the window licks the night.

Pile on the logs... Give me your hands,
Friends! No,— it is not fright...
But hold me... somewhere I heard demands...
And on the window licks the night.

    Re: Today's poet

This is an interesting poem (imo).

I Foresee the Breaking of All That Is Breakable

Perhaps after all it is, merely, a desire
    to use the word thanatopsical—
but if you can wash or handle
    artifacts like this blue
tea mug, carried from Crete as a gift
from a friend, or this nacreous
    orange bowl,
    a honeymoon souvenir
    bought in a now-defunct artists'
    shop in Colorado, or
    this antique Chinese mudman
    carrying his sponges
and fish from a day at the pier,
    without a pathological
fixation on the day you will stumble
and drop it, or smack it
against the sink divider or brush
    it with a hand reaching
for the letter opener, you are junzi:
a superior person, as Confucius had it.
    You probably make love
    to your spouse without imagining
    betrayal and pay taxes
    without complaint
    because you think nothing
    in truth belongs to you.

They invented the earth for people
like you, and then salted it.

    John Estes
