The original Ritchey Swiss Cross frames were built in Tange Prestige d/b cro-mo; seemingly to celebrate the fact that Tom Ritchey was sponsoring a couple of top Swiss riders including the then world champion. A club mate has a Ritchey cro-mo 'rigid' ( frame & fork ) mtb, from the same era, as his everyday hack bike. Cutting edge in its day but he now rides it 'gently', aware of the corosion and stress that the years have put into it.
Has Ritchey himself re-introduced the Swiss Cross?

I think that you are at crossed purposes here, Hann. In their "Cyclo-cross Frames" section, the Planet-X website lists the Van Nicholas Pioneer Rohloff, and it is badged as such!Yes, they are rebadged Van Nicholas ones, the ones where Van Nicholas thinks the welds aren't quite tidy looking enough
I have a Planet-X Ti Sportive road frame. This and the Ti Road race frame are made for Planet-X, in Chattanooga, Tennessee by Lynskey. The Lynskey family were the founders of the Litespeed brand in the mid 80's, before selling out to Merlin in 99. In the early 2000's, Phil Lynskey got back into frame building under his own name. The Planet-X bikes do not have "stickers" (daz h) on them. All the logos are etched on at manufacture and there is nothing whatsoever dubious about the welds. At one of the Bowland FR bike challenges, two of my "carbon" clubmates ( one has a Cervelo, the other a Specialised S works ) were swooning over the quality of the welds on the Ti Sportive!:thumbup:
For several years, upto two or three years ago, Plant-X's "On-One" division did list an "own brand" Ti cyclo-cross frame that was manufactured in the far east - maybe that is what you are referring to. They seemed ok. Nick Craig used one for several years at the 3 Peaks, prior to his Scott deal. The only one that was ever "returned" to Brant Richards at On-One, had been ridden into (and run over by) a Mitsubishi Shogun!!

Oooops... ok, I need to do some more research about this, but a mate of mine bought a Ti road frame from PX and it was clear it was a Van Nicholas, branded PX... I shall closely examine it when we next go out for a ride
The first run of Planet X Ti frames were Lynskey, the current ones are built by Van Nicholas - but badged as Planet X. Confusingly, they sometimes also stock Van Nicholas frames as well.
The original Ritchey Swiss Cross frames were all hand brazed by Tom Ritchey. The sample of the new one was also hand brazed by Tom Ritchey, but the production run is tig welded in Tawain. There was talk on another forum from someone at Ritchey that there may be a limited run of the new frame, but hand brazed by Tom.

Yes indeed; apologies to Hann! Just had a look at the road frame section of the Planet-X website and the Sportive frame depicted is definitely from a different batch than mine - they now have rear rack mounts (which I would have quite liked) and the weld quality definitely looks inferior to my Lynskey built frame - the shot of the seat cluster that depicts the rack mounts also displays some less than perfect welds (brake bridge / seat stay), not to mention the rather tacky looking Planet-X sticker on the seat tube.
Glad that I bought mine when I did ( 13 months ago )!
It's only a couple of months ago that I was looking at the same page of that website and they were singing the praises of the welding by the girls at Lynskey!! Which they are not doing now.
Dom, there are some excellent frame builders / tig welding contractors in Taiwan and if they are being endorsed by Tom Ritchey, the product should be excellent. Just a pity that Tange are not still producing their excellent range of cro-mo tube sets.

I'm also a bit perplexed about the 'lobbing of bikes in the hedge' appraoch for the winter duathlon - can we not engineer some sort of temporary bike rack guarded by an angry looking bowlander for the transition?!
Great night mtb yesterday including a very close encounter with an angry looking badger.
