Yes, my team of cake bakers are committed to getting baking (I just managed to convince them tonight). If 5 miles sounds too short to roll out of bed for (MC?) then you could always tag on a piece (loop) of the Crowden-Shelf-Snake fells to the day's outing before / after G'Pud. Just a thought for those of you've already committed cash to travel to these lovely parts, as well as those who haven't.
Thanks for the plug OB1. If 5 miles isn't enough, then that's fine as it's actually about 5.5 miles... If you really want to, you can enter in advance, but frankly that just confuses things. Details on the greatest gravy website ever... www.nblg.co.uk

We are a very supportive bunch on here BUT also a very honest and open bunch.
    Communication cost nothing.
I have run through from Marsden to Crowden this afternoon in fantastic weather (bonus) and planning to go from Crowden to Edale tomorrow but not sure if I am wasting my time as no OOB have been published  Surely permissions should be in place by now.

There were 217 confirmed entries last year generating £2,170. Mountain Rescue eventually received a donation of £510. I would be interested to learn how much of the remainder was returned to disappointed runners as everyone I know asked for their total entry to be donated to MR. At the moment the Gravy Pud is looking very appealing!!

    Dear Tanky's Troggers

It is with great sadness that I have to announce that Tanky's Trog cannot go ahead this year. You will of course receive a full refund.

Organisation for the race has always started at the beginning of September and this year, after last years organisation, I was not anticipating any major issues. However several issues have arose which have made the organisation impossible to be completed:

I have been battling for several weeks now to secure a 'Safety Team' for the event after being advised by Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team in early October that they were unable to provide support due to 'operational committments'. After almost 39 years of support from them, for which I and my family are very grateful, having this essential support retracted at such a late stage left me requesting late help from other organisations that are not able to commit to anything with such a short period of notice.

I have also been unable to secure the Marsden sports hall for the start as when I called to make the booking the secretary was under the impression that the booking had already been made for this event although it turned out to be another booking in January and they could not oblige my request for December.

Permissions for land use that were submitted within the normal timescales, in fact, earlier that in recent years, again have not completely come through yet, despite me providing all necessary information and chasing for feedback, possibly as people thought they had already completed the paperwork for this event.

It is only in the last 2 weeks that I have become aware that there is another 'Marsden to Edale' race being organised by some of the previous co-organisers of the Trog.

If I had been informed about this new event, then I would obviously have worked with the organisers to avoid some of the confusion that has occurred and we could have ensured 2 great races were available for runners.

The Stokes family are deeply sadden by these events, as we have lived through Tanky's for all these years. Annually, over 39 years, the time from September to beginning of December has been overtaken by the Trog, which requires a lot of personal effort and dedication to organise. But we felt it was always worth it when we blew the whistle at 9am and then saw the last runners home safe. It will not be the same to not have this event this year in our family. However the safety of our runners comes first and foremost and due to the potential severity of this race, due to the route and time of year, it is just not feasible to go ahead without a dedicated safety team working alongside us and this is the fundamental reason for its cancellation.

The money raised this year was to go to The Alzheimers Society. For those that dont know, Tanky is in the early stages of this illness, of course he is still himself some of the time (!), and it is more distressing to those that love him. Thankfully he has no knowledge of this!

I would like to take this opportunity to officially thank those that have been involved in the successful operation of the event over the many years; Trevor (late) and Denise Briggs, Alan Jones, Rod Hyde, Jim Butley and the Ecclesall Scouts, Bev Franklin and Glenis McCarthy, Mrs Beeney, Mrs Wright at the Edale Village Hall, The Ramblers Inn, You the entrants, The Woodhead and Edale Mountain Rescue Teams, Kate, Esther, Rob and of course Tanky himself!!

BUT watch out for next year - we do intend to find alternate solutions to the problems faced this year and will let you know soon what these are!

We are continually grateful of your support, committment and dedication!

Your entry fee will be posted back to you in due course but please bear with me!

    Watch out for Tanky's 2012

    Yours sincerely

Personally I think Clare has been treated badly. It will be hard to get permission to have two long distance races over very similar ground in the heart of winter within a six week period. Unless people sort this out between Tanky's and the Trigger it could be the end of Tanky's. I am very new to fell running so I have never met Tanky or been involved in the race while he ran it. But it would be a real pity to loose a race with such a long history.

It is a great shame. But I find myself sympathising with about 20% of the content of the announcement and questioning the other 80%. Some of it isn't right, some of it seems to be speculation presented as fact.

I'm afraid, in my opinion, the foundations for the cancellation of Tanky's 2011 were laid in 2010.

Tanky - top bloke, maverick. I first met him when I bought some outdoor gear from him when I was about 14yrs old - he was full of inspiration and stuff then (I'm now nearly 50)...ran the Trog a number of times and know folk who've ran it for most if not all of its time.
Races do end, and new things come about - it would be folly to suggest that this new trigger race caused the demise of the Trog. Hopefully the Trog will return and be as well organised as it has been in later years and as maverick as it was many years ago!

Great post. I too remember browsing his shop as a nipper and getting bits of climbing gear. I don't think you can blame the cancellation on the Trigger though. I will be running (mostly) Marsden Edale next sat morning, met three doing it this morning. It is a classic crossing with so many possible route choices, why wait until the first Sunday in December to have a crack at it?

    Re: Tanky's trog

It's a shame this race is not being ran this year. I always rather fancied it myself but never managed to fit it in. I have ran much of the ground it covers and would love to run it all in one go. But, for those who are coming to the area that weekend you are all more than welcome to run the Gravy Pud. Sunday 4th December, 11am start. Pre entry available or entry of the day. (I think Dom likes entry on the day more!!) I think we might have just found the charity that we could donate this years race money to now TT is cancelled!
