The starts are where it is at on the fells by the look. I managed to hammer through a fair few people on the tops, but was pretty much running off the natural course line and just lost too much time walking behind people up the 1st climb at the start. Lesson learned!
Yeah I did pretty much the same. I thought I was near the front at the start but as they pushed us back, more people then joined at the front and that then made the task of having to fight all the way up the first hill. I got behind too many people who were almost walking only a few hundred metres into the race. A lesson to be learned for future years. having said that i thought the start was magnificent and a real experience to behold!!

When you look at the finish times of a 6 mile race the difference between a good time and an average time hangs around 10 mins. I finished in 1:03. I kept clocking my stops, hold ups and walks when I could have been running and it amounts to over 6 minutes in time. Its a lot, but I suppose you ave to think that most other people are in the same position.

Makes you wonder though what time one could get running the course flat out with no hold ups?

I would like to do that. Although, Im not sure about you, but I nevers seem to go as fast in training as I do in a race. Some internal inner beast grabs me and pushes me to dig deeper when the numbers are pinned on.

Hi folks, is this one suitable for a rookie fell runner? Any tips over the course would be grand!

If you can run/ walk for 6 miles or so you should be ok. If you enjoy (like me) shin deep mud you'll have a blast. It is a very popular race so there will be a bottleneck at the start until you get onto the ridge. Due to the large no's navigation shouldn't be an issue - even if the clag is down-you're not that far away from civilisation. How are you descending ? There is a sharp descent of the pike down to London Rd.
Invest in a pair of fell shoes if you haven't done so already - above all else - Enjoy - the well earned pint in the pub when you finish.

Info for those attending the Shepherds Skyline Race - Sat 3rd Nov 2012

Please note that to try and prevent the congestion caused by the number of cars in previous years we have the cooperation of a local farmer and will be using a track and fields to park as many cars as possible off the lane. This will result in an additional £1 charge on the day for all senior runners which will be collected at registration. (increasing the senior entry fee to £6). Junior entries will remain at £1.

I would still ask that you try and share transport as much as possible. We will be parking some cars on the lane but will leave passing places every 10 cars marked by a traffic cone and no parking sign to enable adequate access for locals, emergency services and buses. PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN THESE PASSING PLACES.

Thank you. See you on Saturday.
