    Re: Fellsman 2012

    Hi Guys, couple of newbie questions;

    1. Which Map? - I'm going to be doing some reccies so i need to get used to the kind of map I'm going to use. It looks like the 1:40thou harveys map covers the whole route but it's a bit tight at the western edge; have people used this and was it accepted? Failing that it's 2 maps (Harvey's or OS) which might be a pain.

    2. Which Bag? - My rucksacks are all too big (OMM style stuff) and I'm guessing it won't all fit in my pete bland bum bag! I reckon a 10-15l sack might do the trick; i quite like waist pockets for food (like the OMM sacks), saves a lot of faffing. I'm assuming that i won't need a bladder (hate the things anyway!) and can get away with a small (500ml?) bike bottle for drinks at checkpoints or from streams?

And before anyone chips in with a "search the thread" kind of answer; i have done!

    Thanks guys,

    Andy.

My maps were 1:25 os on MM A4 laminated, I took a map to kitcheck but I had sufficient coverage to pass.

I used my OMM 20 but don't fill it, It's up to you hom much you want to carry esp if the weather is iffy, how long wil you be running through the night?

I used the Harveys map plus a photocopy of the relevant bit of the OS 1:50K map to cover this missing section.

I also took some fairly detailed Memory Map copies (of OS) of the route - about 10 sheets to be honest - all tucked into a clear plastic sleeve with the bearings, other navigation notes and expected times written on each! I had the relevant kit check maps stuffed into the bottom of my rucksack......
    ..which was .....
    GoLite Rush

practically perfect in every way in my opinion.

enjoy, it's a cracking day out.

    Hi Andy

I did the Fellsman 2 years ago and remember the kit list was quite comprehensive http://www.fellsman.org.uk/doku.php?id=event:rules I took 2 OS maps which incidentally I never used as my partner knew the way.

Everyone has to empty their bag out on to a table for the kit check, it's very thorough so don't pack it too neatly in the morning. Although the checkpoint food is very good, you may need something to keep you going in between.

    Re: Fellsman

    Bags:
I used my OMM Ultra 15L on this year's Fellsman (my first but hopefully not last), and that was amply large - I fitted my full kit in it for this year's OMM. I wholeheartedly agree that side-pockets are great for food, and a water bottle holder on the side is good. I might condsider getting something smaller, especially if it fits well when only partly full. I did, however, take way too much food for the Fellsman - probably well over a kilo... I didn't weight it - so I will take less next year. There is plenty available on the course.

    Maps:
I thought that, for kit check purposes, you needed one of the specific combinations of maps that they mandate on the Fellsman website, so therefore print-outs are not sufficient (although might be useful to take as well). I took the OS maps, although didn't need them much as we got most of the way round in the light (and then the way was pretty obvious).

Thanks guys, some good stuff there. I'm training with a 10l pack at the moment; it's actually a hydration pack that i use for MTB but i might try one of those bottle carriers that attaches to the shoulder strap; Raidlight style. I've a suspicion that it'll bounce around and drive me mad but it'd be cheaper than a new pack.

I've emailed the organsier about the possibility of doing a special 50th anniversary map (like the Lakeland 100/50) and they seemed very positive about it. It'd certainly solve any issues with runners using home made strip maps.

I think I managed to cram all the required gear into my OMM 10L back pack last time but be warned it was crammed tight and difficult to actually get anything out of. It was also too round in shape and left some pretty good friction grazes on my back come the finish. Other competitors I know got round this by stitching a cushion on the backpack but a 15L backpack would be better. Other than emergency food, there's little need to carry stuff to eat and ditto on the drinks front one bottle of drink is fine. There are 8 checkpoints that provide ample (and then some) food and drink to stuff your face with.
