I'd got nowt in mind this side of New Year Ash. However, the missus is talking about trying to fit in a bit of time on the fells between Christmas and New Year so I'll let you know if we decide to head up to the Lakes.

Will be reccing round after Christmas and over New Year. Am going to be based in Little Langdale so should be taking a good close look at leg 3 with some long days is the aim. Also likely to be back up early in new year as I've heard offered my services for a winter round being attempted.

Our Dec 10 recce of leg 2 is still on. One car from W Cheshire, one car from E Cheshire, 5 runners so far. Rendezvous at Dunmail at 9am to dump a car, then setting off from Threlkeld at 9:30 approx. Anyone welcome. Can anyone give more info about the best line off Seat Sandal? I've not been able to locate the trod so far, using Bob W's notes. Ended up descending to the beck path instead on my JNLC run.

Aim for steel fell if it's clear and you won't go far wrong. Head for the west cairn from the summit (i usually pass it slightly on the right) and hold the high ground and resist the urge to drop right into Raise Beck (horrible contouring if you do). If you're dead on you'll see a finger of rock as the ground ahead starts to steepen in about 250 metres (not visible until you're right on it), perhaps a touch more? and the trod is then obvious. I noticed last winter that the trod is getting clearer further up the hill (it used to start halfway down the steep slope about 5 years ago!) so you might see it earlier, but that was my way of finding it. The initial bearing is, if i recall is slightly south of west before turning north west as things steepen.

It might be worth doing it in the opposite direction then you are working back from your ultimate target. Take it steady and keep checking by looking back to see if there are any landmarks, don't add any cairns though .

This shot http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2127709 shows what you need to aim for - the point where the right hand end of Steel Fell suddenly gets steeper.

    Hi Andy
Do you mind if join you on the 10th? I did leg 2 a couple of weeks ago and did notice the trod off SS starting nearer the summit as Mark (ST) mentioned.

Glad to have you join us Simon: we're largely learning the route ourselves rather than relying on the BG experts to lead us round. Having said that, it will be very useful if you could help us find that trod! I'm expecting the rest of this leg to be relatively straightforward.

    Re: BG 2012 Recce's....

Right, having looked at the forecast for the Lakes for this Saturday (3rd), I think my preference for a big day out is, the Hebden route; some or all of the Hobble route or else a route local to me in the Peak of ~30 miles and 7000ft+.

I know the route well and have a time in mind for myself. Open to suggestions, but I think as half the idea of recce'ing is to eye ball the route, and the weather looks doubtful, a better use of time maybe to stay further South...
