Ran the section from Guiseley to Menston and then back along the road today. Hard work - especially into the wind on Baildon/Ilkley moor.
The paving slabs from the trig point to Whetstone Gate make a huge difference on that section. So much easier to run! You will though, be pleased to hear I managed to find some good bogs on the way up to the 12 Apostles and then up to the trig point and also from Whetstone gate up to Buck stones.
I bet the section immediatey after the wall on the way up to the 12 Apostles was like a lake!
I was expecting it to be, but it actually wasn't much worse than on the actual day last year (maybe even slightly better?) - and the water was considerably warmer than the icy cold stuff we had last year.
The section between Whetstone Gate and Buck Stones was much better than I expected - the puddles and bogs were only shin deep, rather than knee deep as they were last year.
I think the stone slabs have spoilt it (the race, I know the area needs protecting) to be honest. I enjoyed disappearing up to my knees in the bogs last year ! I don't like anything resembling a road !
who holds the record for this race? I guess it could be under threat with the much easier ground with the trod now?
I've got my entry in. It's a birthday treat for me. ;o)
I think that's a bit of an overreaction! - It's only 500m (out of 35km) or so of slabs (and some of them were there anyway) - just from the Trig point to Whetstone Gate. If you really want to run through the bogs on either side of it, then you can still do so. The road section from Bleach Mill through Menston is far longer! As is the run down from Yorkgate to the finish and the bit through Esholt...
