Still working! Travelling to St Helens and back plus 10 hours on a laptop and the benefits of my 15 mile run yesterday have evaporated.
FRA forum has been a nice distraction though. Managed to nip out for circuit training - Monday nights 8pm - good session (good smattering of fell runners)

Clearly it is very cold and very icy out there. If anyone is out reccying and comes across any particularly bad stretches please PM me. I know where to expect the bad bits, and think that mostly there's ways round these, but any info would be appreciated so I can think about flagging detours or issue suitable warnings at the start of the race. On the plus side (or not, depending on your nav skills) there should be plenty of footprints to follow!

Nearly got the entries list sorted. Will let you know when it's posted on the cvfr website.

After a recce on thursday (following a lovely breakfast served by the lovely people at the cricket club cafe) and getting extremely lost in the snow, I have put together a GPX, downloadable to garmin, google earth etc, on my blog.

    http://ultramarathonjohn.blogspot.co...x-kml-tcx.html

Feel free to use it, it is mostly accurate to - or + 10m, useful as a quick guide to check your're still on the right route.

Look forward to seeing you all on Saturday! Hope it thaws a bit.

Hi, I know you asked me if I had a gps map thing, and sorry I didn't get back to you, but I don't, so you haven't wasted your time. However, looking at your route, there's a bit at the start and end you've not got quite right - which could lead to a nasty shock unless you've just missed it out for reccy purposes! For anyone else looking at your map, I'm putting the info up here so that you don't all run off in the wrong direction following your watches :-) (you're probably as well to follow James Logue in any case!).

At the start: You run down the hill on the road in the direction of the final checkpoint. So there's a loop heading off in the opposite direction to where you started, that then heads back up to the cricket club via the route that you have mapped for the finish.

At the end: You come down to the final checkpoint, but then take an earlier right turn than the one you have mapped (which is the start loop), taking you up (and I mean UP!) through the fields to the road beside the house which is first on your right as you run downhill at the start. Then it's up the road and along the track to the cricket club - not forgetting to do a lap of the cricket pitch before you cross the finish line. And I'm not kidding about the the lap, it really is part of the race!

Other than that I think the map looks right. Sorry I don't have any all singing and dancing maps to offer up for clarity - I'm hoping to work on this before next year.

I hope it warms up soon! The snowplough has just gone past my house, and it'll be thicker up at Old Town which could means problems parking. Plus I have no idea how I'll get all my road signs etc into the ground - it's absolutely solid! Dig out your gear everyone - there's kit rules and there's common sense, and I expect everyone to have both

...and that's not an invitation to commence discussions on kit rules! It really isn't. Don't even go there.

Apologies! I traced the map from the OS map provided on the FRA site. Must have got it a bit wrong. Managed to recce most of the main route though, but hopefully it will be well marked! And yes it is horrible up there being all frozen! Pray to the sun god this week! hehe!

Thought this was a race that tested everyones ability to the max not only their ability to run for the full distance but also to find their way around it. Now we have people mapping the route out for people (wrongly) and then having the cheek to try to sell it other runners. Hardly in the spirit of the game. Outrageous, Is having a pre set route in a GPS cheating or not.

    Ooh, now you've done it!

I'll get my two pennorth in first -

It's not a navigation event; there are no points for number of checkpoints visited and a large proportion of the race route is preset and marked. Even the tricky sections are still almost entirely on established paths. If you want a nav event, have a look at what darkandwhite offer, or enter the Reservoir Bogs race.

He's not trying to 'sell' anything (but I guess you meant 'offer' rather than 'make money out of')

It's not cheating (see above) and even if it were, it would be an almost unenforceable rule.

The first time I did the trog I got hopelessly lost between High Brown Knoll and Shackleton Knoll; ended up giving up and cutting west to the road. Second time I took a GPS trace on my Garmin; never even looked at it but it was there if I needed it. I've got no qualms about other runners using GPS traces; anyone in the running for a prize will probably already know their way and/or have reccied it already.

But that's just my take on it; feel free to disagree!

Seconded; if it weren't for the risk of cancellation, I'd be praying for cold weather for next sunday. Give me frozen tundra over bog any day! The slabs on the Pennine way are always treacherous in fell shoes either way so it makes no difference to that stretch.

    Nobody has to use it.

I offered it out of goodwill to perhaps help someone. I will be using it and it will help me.

The OS map of the route was on FRA website, i simply traced it out and put it in a gpx. Ill be bringing a map too.

I've already mentioned on my blog how I dont want people to rely on it, always carry proper map etc, its just useful for a quick glance at a crossroads etc.

I'm not selling it, its totally free.
