A group of 5 - 7 Fieldfare's in the trees at the bottom of the garden. Quite funny birds hopping through the branches, looked like they were having great fun.

Plus the normal local Green Woodpecker.

Our Stolly started this thread in May 2008 with the sighting of a Long Eared Owl in a small copse not far from Helwith Bridge.

Almost 4 years later here's my sightings of Short Eared Owls on the high moors above Settle (Stolly's home village)...

Oh my god! they are brilliant (as usual Wharfee). The one with the sun shining through its feathers is superb! I know just how hard it is to capture an owl flying and am almost tempted to post my very blurry barn owl that looks like its having a poo in flight just because it looks so bad in comparison that its quite funny! Anyway, a sighting of any owl is always a treat imo.

Wow. I was teaching about adaptation today and telling the kids about binocular vision in predators. I'll show them those pics tomorrow.

I know where the owls are hanging out (secret location on the high moors up the Dales) so I've been going there with the intention of getting some in-flight shots. I have actually thought about trying to attract the owls by some sort of feeding, dead day old chicks perhaps? But that would be cheating! Mind you, in this weather the owls might be glad of an easy meal.
Here's another one I took a few days ago...

I think thats the best one Andy

I might have a wander up the hill near by, I know where there is a nest, it was discovered on a night run once scrambling up a crag.
I see one quite often on an early or night run, Nearly stood on it once on a night race as the owl was on the ground with a kill as I hopped over a fence.
