    Re: BG 2012 Recce's....

I have been too busy training and sorting my running clubs sessions, as I somehow became the coach!

Anyway yes I am atill aiming for June and have most of my team sorted and a barn booked for my "base camp"
On Thursday I went up to the skiddaw summit and then straight back down and did a few shorter hill reps, Friday ended up being a 27mile jog/walk of leg 1 and 2 of the L100 and back along the same route, so a good time on feet exercise.

Sounds like you're going well Ash. You're much further on than I am!! I think I've got two people sorted, my support has accidently booked some work on the Saturday I'm thinking of doing it! I'm looking at June 8-10th, but as I said earlier I need some confidence building long days in so I can cement things!! I'd like to assist people in their attempts but due to my working weekends, plus occasional races, family stuff etc, it makes it tricky.

Went up on Monday with Hazel and AndreaS from Macc to look at Leg 2 (again). Horrid weather
as the visibility ~ 30 yards in places. Came down Sticks Pass as the weather was deteriorating and it was getting colder. As we dropped down though, we came out of the cloud and the view down from Sticks Pass towards Thirlspot was stunning... real classic Lake District fells and fantastic colours on the hillsides... a chorus of Jerusalem burst forth!!!

Did over 4,000 ft and had a look at the Dodds (which I have always found hard to navigate or picture my way through) and reminded myself how horrible Clough Head is so not a waste of time despite the crappy weather.

I need to get to the Lakes more to get some of those long, long climbs in.

Done some hill reps today (4 x 500') and tripped on a tree root at full tilt descending for the final time and landed heavily.

This was meant to be a pair of big back to back days, but abbreviated by weather and then exercising the descenders theory of "disengage brain". I managed to disengage brain, but then heavily engaged Teggs Nose... face first. Nothing broken but a bit sore.

This is a big step...until now I haven't even been able to look at the BG section; but DT said you'd fallen so needs must!

If you're starting to trip over you may be getting a bit tired and losing concentration. Could you be in need of a lighter week of training?

Oh and I agree; Clough Head is horrendous!

Okay it's time for me to stop procrastinating and throw my hat in the ring as well. I'm looking at an attempt on the 2nd June, tea time start (clockwise). After months of deliberating over fitness, injuries and a whole multitude of other excuses one can come up with it's time to just say let's do it. I have had plenty of support interest over the past 10 months or so and now I'm asking people to commit to it. Should have a few decent pacers lined up.

I've put in some good hill time, mainly on my todd, and have done most of the route once or twice so far. I'd be keen to get out with a few other contenders over the coming months if anyone's interested and would really like to help anyone else out if they're going for it before then. I'm close by (Kendal) but need to stick to weekends and Easter school hols (or evenings I guess).

"Sounds like you're going well Ash"

Thanks I still feel think that I have quite abit of work to do, mainly on trying to practice/recce the route and do a couple of legs at once. I have my last big weekend planned for May which is 4 weeks before my attempt, where I will do two legs together.

My support team is mainly friends from my running club and my navigators are experienced fell runners on the BGR that my friend "nee bother" has kindly arranged, as he knows them well

I do hope to get to the Lakes as often as possible and will keep an eye out to see if it's possible to meet up with any of the recce's that people plan on this forum. I would also like to help people out on actual attempts, however as my attempt is all booked for mid June this may not be possible, as we all seem to be going around the same time and I will need a little rest and recovery period

Pleased to hear things are going well Ash, I also have launched into a proper training cycle leading up to my attempt. You raise an interesting question and something that I have been considering - that of a "little rest and recovery period". I wonder what the optimum taper would be for a BG? Most people try and get a back-to-back support in prior to their own attempt, but any normal mortal will need a recovery period from that. I'm thinking that about 2 - 3 weeks of gradually decreasing intensity with a total rest week leading up to the Big Day should be sufficient. What do you think?

Thanks for that - and the consensus seem to agree with my own thinking on this. Of course, I am getting on a bit .... I might have to have a few days off work beforehand in the reclined position as well!
