Aye, that sounds a good range for round here Steve.
He knows his stuff does Nikalas.

If you're happy to use the Spark you can either just change tyres to slicks or look for cheap set of wheels somewhere so you can change quickly when going off-road. There's, again, probably a lot of the same wheels that yours is running on ebay as a lot of people retro fit 'better' wheel sets than the standard ones then sell the factory fit ones on. Alternatively just ask your friendly local bike shop for his advice as to a 'cheap' wheelset that will do. With disc brakes now it easier as you don't need to consider rim width, just fit the right brake disc.

Cross bike maybe? Most versatile bike i'd say.
If you're going the second wheels route, most disk MTBs will fit a set of 700x23c wheels in, and the bottom bracket height ends up pretty similar to that with big MTB tyres.
Otherwise, I'd look second hand. I got a ti frame, carbon forks, full 20 speed Campag Centaur groupset and nice wheels for £725 last year, and it's a lot more bike than I could afford new

Pretty surprised no one's mentioned the cycle to work scheme. If this is an option for you I'd definitely look into it. You'd certainly get more bang for your buck.
"That was the night everything changed"
Funny this thread came up. Our place has the cycle to work scheme and i've been considering using it to buy a road bike, the Ribble Nik has suggested is just what i'd go for.
