Regardless of your own ability, experience - or ambition/pride! - the organisers ask all pairs to remain together, retire together if retirement is needed, and report to the finish as a pair. It's not too much to ask...
Assuming he's telling the truth, it's different from 2009 in that they were open and honest with the marshalls, and he was explicitly running the rest of the route unofficially, outside the race. Whereas in 2009 there was clear intent to deceive.

    Re: Old Counties Tops

It all seemed above board, agreed and accepted to me from what I could tell at the finish. The day turned out perfect for a solo 19-mile run across the fells.

Daz, sorry for the radio silence. Life's too busy these days. Sorry for wrecking your OCT attempt, but there was nothing in the legs. I was only good enough for hiking, and OCT doesn't do hiking, does it? A look at my heart rate record afterwards told me how slowly I must have been going: it was much slower than normal. The previous weekend's Brecon 40 and an exhausting week with not enough sleep were not the best preparation. I must return for a better crack at it, methinks. Still, it was great to hang around at the finish to see some of the sharp end finishers. I hope to get my photographs uploaded at least before leaving for the Northants Ultra.

Steve, good to chat briefly at the start. Good result for you.

But if he cleared it with the marshalls and RO's why is it a problem? I'd have carried on..

I'd love to face an FRA disciplinary panel though.. I think I'd be very Cantona-esque in my response..

I may try and do a race in some else's name just so I can finally meet Breezey... oh and the grump.. it'd be sat in the corner.. in the dark anonymously sniping away... can't wait..

You could do it in my name - be the only time I would be in the top 10!!

I went into fell running because of the freedom that it brings and the lack of rules and regulations, Not that i want to offend anybody but life is full of pointless rules and regs at times. I've never been a politically correct sort of person as it's not what i'm about. If somebody wants to ban me for what i did fair do's.
Like i said in the previous post i cleared it with my partner to carry on and the marshalls. i finished the event on my own bat as a training run, safely, with the correct kit and plenty of food. If the weather had been bad i probably would have pulled out. With all respect Fellhound, i know you're an experienced and very fast fell runner. I appreciate what your saying, but it was my decision just like when i ran 8 miles on the Rossy fells today. Please don't put a damper on the sport i love so much

Bad luck Nick, wasn't to be on the day, it's a tough race is this. Sure you'll be back though. Great pics, brings back memories of the day, seems like years ago now my legs have recovered:thumbup:

Finally got round to my race report (uncannily similar to BritNicks, until Angle Tarn fortunately). It's here . Enjoy.

No intention to put a damper on anything Stanners. The general laid back atmosphere of fellrunning is one of the reasons I love it too and the best way to keep it that way is to stay within the spirit of the few rules there are. There has to be some framework - if only for safety's sake - and the result of ignoring it will be an increase in official intervention, which I'm sure none of us want.

The marshalls out on the course can't do much if you decide you are ripping off your number and just carrying on "outside" the event, but the rules do state that you are "expected to stay with the retiree". For an extremely challenging event like the Old County Tops the rules are surprisingly simple and unofficious. Supporting them will help to keep it that way.

My personal view is that you start this event as a team of two and should remain a team of two to the end, even if the end is premature. This attitude cost me an attempt on the BG many years ago but, hey, a team's a team.

Cheers Mick! Enjoyed reading your report!
And yes, I do believe I was the first Dutchman...feels very good!
Will send you a link, once I've finished my write-up; think it will be done before next year's OCT!
