But the reason some of us recall Hinault with awe and Coppi is immortal is because they had panache. Chiappucci, Bahamontes, Pantani, Fignon: they had élan. Even LeMond had character-spoilt child mostly-but Wiggins?
Of that list Hinault, Coppi, Fignon and Lemond all won the Tour and won, or tried to win, Paris-Roubaix. I do wish that there wasn't such an emphasis on the Tour these days.

Bahamontes won the Tour in 1959 (and won King of the Mountains six times).

Please elaborate all knowing and incredibly patronising Mr Breeze... I don't think 25 out of 38 years is too bad.. I remember watching Roche in 1987.

    Watched Roche?

I've met and talked with him (at Bourg D'Oisans).

I'm sure he recalls it vividly.

and.... honestly, you really want this to degenerate into a tit for tat.. "I've met so and so".. trust me, if the meeting of top sportsmen and cyclists is your definition of knowledge, you maybe ought to check what my job is.

I have always thought the clue was in the avatar.

Anyway, Roche was quite perceptive and said "if you ever encounter that nikolas chappie I warn you he is the sort of person who will post comments about other contributions to the FRA forum on cycling as "Absolute bollocks.."

    Have a nice day.

I think it's pretty much a generally accepted fact that there isn't as much attacking flair in the TdF in the modern era compared to the 1980s and before isn't it?
But then many would tell you that the Anquetil years were just as tedious as the Indurain years.
I think overdeveloped team strategy as sponsored by US Postal has a lot to answer for though. And radios.

Are you this bumptious and patronising in real life?

Okay, maybe I was a little harsh on Carlos but, based on previous exchanges with him, he's more than capable of looking out for himself and doesn't need you springing to his defence.

His post managed to push two of my buttons. First, a rose tinted spectacles view of the past.. ZHR makes a very good point about the Anquetil years. Second, the unique and perverse British inability to cope with winning.. I just don't get it.
