Borrowdale Fell Race

Cheers Steve. Another year another retirement on top of Gable. Think I'll have to start not letting my heart overule my brain in future for these long races. Haven't been running particulary well all year but still found myself on the start line. Thank you to the summit marshalls on Gable (Howgill harriers) for the escort back to Stonethwaite and then a lift to the finish and thank you to the organisers for sticking around awaiting our arrival - apologies for the late check in- definitely picked up the lantern rouge.

A pleasure to meet Livi & Wharefego early doors & good to see the big man Amex chillin at Esk Hause with his possee.

Manhar I think I followed you and your group for what seemed like hours. There was myself and Willheim, at the back and I was convinced that if we managed to cling onto you three then we might get round. I took a wrong turn before Esk Hause, so then I was a long way back and I list you around Scafel. Anyway you'll be glad to know that your pace was the limit of another runner's ambitions. We baled out at StyeHead. Missed the route up Great Gable and time was heavily against us by then. Well done for getting to the top.

Really enjoyed it unexpectedly beautiful day meaning I now have a rather red face and shoulders - the thunder and hail forecast meant I didn't think to put on suncream!
Struggled a little bit int heat, so didn't get in under 5 hrs which was a vague ambition, but revised it to 5hrs 30 at the top of Dale Head and got in in 5hrs 21 so very very happy though I think a slight low point was standing shaking a gate near the end because my heat-addled brain couldn't quite work out the opening mechanism.... I also filled my bottle from every stream (4 times ish??) and got a full bottle at Honister, when I'd normally only drink less than a bottle full! And I still feel dehydrated today! Awesome end to the day with live music and athletics on the tv in the Scafell hotel too, thoroughly recommend sticking around for that next year (minus the olympics!). Lovely to meet and chat to various people too

I was having a walk round the Langdale Horseshoe route yesterday. I took this picture of the Scafell Massif from just after 3 Tarns. I envied the runners views from Scafell Pike but had I been able to run I think I would have struggled a bit in the warm conditions. Well done everyone who took part

Ouch is all I can say! I finished, but my clubmate didn't. Wheels fell off for me after coming off Gable, I'm not sure why but en-route to Honister I suddenly ran out of steam. Had to walk a half mile or so, which is quite unusual, and then managed to pick up my feet and run down to Honister. Loads of you will have seen me lay down on the way up Dale Head, my legs were shot and I seriously wanted to jack in but hung on. Descent off Dale head was messy, fell over twice after the quarry on the way back to Rosthwaite and again had to walk a short way. Struggled into the finish in 4:23 in a dismal 168th place. I will go back and do this again at some point and do it justice. Today was not my day but I was glad to finish. Weather was super hot and muggy, not ideal conditions at all, I think I drank about 5 litres of fluid today (before and during the race) but still feel dehydrated. Kudos to all finishers, and those that put in a brave effort.

Are you sure you did not drink too much Rob? Did you weigh yourself before/after?

Love the pic. A really brilliant way down into Eskdale is the little known south ridge of Esk Pike, which is the intervening spur in the middle distance. From the summit of esk pike just follow your nose down - the views ahead are great and the gradient perfect for running.

Nice one Ian. Some very similar pics to those I took during the race, about 350 in fact! That's one of the reasons I got to the Honister cut-off with 2 minutes to spare, and finished right at the back in a few minutes under 6 hours!
A brilliant day out on the best fells in the world!

Just for interest, I was at Glenridding today for the World Uphill Trials - don't know the Mens Result but Steve Vernon looked like he was on the way to victory, but Ricky Lightfoot was running.
Big Up to Ricky, winning Borrowdale and then taking on a top class field in an Uphill race to Helvellyn Lower Man stats approx 8 mile/3500ft race.

The farmer we were talking too in the Scafell Hotel said he spotted him in the boozer the night before Borrowdale too!!!
