    Re: Olympics 2012

I think overall the Olympics went extremely well. It was very uplifting and inspiring.

I think the Opening ceremony was excellent and the closing ceremony a near miss.

I don't like most of the acts on the closing ceremony, but I wouldn't expect to. They are hardly going to close out with Iron Maiden and the Smiths are they for an international audience.

the acts that were there, fair enough with the exception of Russell Brand.

But the song choice of George Micheal for his 2nd number and the Annie Lennox song were dreadful choices. If they'd have done Faith and Sweet Dreams it would have knitted together better.

The Who excellent, Emili Sands was very good - first time I've heard her, Muse great but I would have preferred a different track and I can't knock Take That - I wouldn't ever go and watch them, but I do often find their songs quite infectious.

Piston Funk Machine would have made it a perfect night

I guess Muse didn't have much choice as that was the official Olympic song!

She looks like the Eastern European women we used to see decades ago.

On the whole I think this Olympics has been brilliant for so many reasons, the best I've seen, but what on earth were they thinking when they included Paul McCartney in the opening ceremony?
And why so much Beatles material in both ceremonies?

Well that was bizarre! A mix of local in jokes (Del boy and rodders) and nods to things that have global appeal (fashion) but less impact at home. As for the music, well lets put some categories.

Should be put out to grass: George Michael, Annie Lennox, PSB, Liam Gallagher and, sadly, Ray Davies

Solid workmanlike performance: One Direction, Kaiser Chiefs, Ed Sheeran, Spice Girls, Emilie Sande

National Treasure status discovered/ensured: Madness, Elbow, Tinie Tempah, Jessie J, Brian May, Eric Idle, Muse, The Who

Ascent to Godhead (if not already there): Lennon (yes, I was moved to tears), Farouk Bulsara

Say what you like but I thought the idea of converting the stadium into a giant video wall was the stroke of genius that blew all previous ceremonies into the water...almost up there with the 204 element olympic flame which, for me, is the most creative idea I have ever witnessed. It summed up everything good about the games.
