.....and....well, what a movie! It's Bond, Jim, but not as we know it.
    best opening sequence? Yes.
    best drinking game? Oh, yes!!
But after that? It Morphs into a dark Shakespearean homoerotic Oedipal stew. For gawds sake, it is even slooowww in parts!
Best Bond movie ever? No. But that's because it is not a Bond movie by established convention. It takes it main cues from the Bourne trilogy and stirs in a rich helping of Bond back story. So, it is satisfying but not in the way you might think.
Hats off to Mendes for some superb cinematography. And Craig for a truly craggy performance....and surely his last as Bond?.

Saw the Bond film Friday and was very disappointed apart from a few moments. I kind of expected it but thought I'd give it another chance. Don't agree with Wheeze on the opening sequence unless he means the bridge fall which was brilliant. I do however agree with Wheeze on the 'superb cinematography.' Those scenes in Scotland were spectacular. If you like over the top explosions and chases mixed in with some serious moments then you'll like this. I'd give it 3 out of 10.

Graham I missed this and it's worth answering so here goes. The latest Bond film is a 3/10 because I can't stand incongruity. If the elements that make up a film clash then they destroy the film even if some of the moments within that film are good or even great. I don't like misplaced humour or silliness in a film that is supposed to be serious, it's a slap in the face. The feeling is similar to when a coward says something offensive to you and sees in your reaction that you don't like it and then says "I'm only joking." Ian Fleming's Bond needs to be re-done for television exactly as the books depict.

Films that I loved are very few and of course I don't have your experience in such matters. I loved 'The Wizard Of Oz' as a child and I still love it now. I've watched it at least 10 times. I love the story, the characters (those talking apple trees were great: "well how would you like someone come along and pick something off of you") and the sets which were magical. There was lots of my sort of humour in it as well particularly when the Tin Man offers the solution of counting sheep to the sleeplessness of the cowardly lion and he answers "that doesn't do any good I'm afraid of them." I also love the way his tail swishes about throughout the film......Swish swish!

My favourite serious film was the 1965 drama 'Flight Of The Phoenix' with James Stewart. It was re-made again about 10 years ago and it was a hatchet job. Other great films were 'The Magnificent Seven (where even Steve Mcqueen was outshone by the masculine Yul Brynner)' and 'The African Queen.' I liked the first three early bond films, I also liked nearly everything I saw Steve Mcqueen in and I liked some of Clint Eastwood's movies. There are many others as well that I can't think of now but the one's above are some of the outstanding ones. Swish swish!

Sorry, I was bit imprecise. By best opening sequence I meant the credits sequence, starting from the rifle shot and then the song. The 'Opening sequence' proper is hackneyed by comparison with Casino Royale which is still miles ahead. Perhaps Craig is too old for parkour chasing now!
    for me, a solid 8/10.
IMHO, Craig should check out now whilst he's ahead. No one likes an ageing Bond. Brosnan hung on far too long.

    Openings?

Well there is the opening 3 1/2 minute sequence in a single-take of A Touch of Evil (dir. Orson Welles 1958) with Russell Metty as cinematographer. Every film maker knows of it. Sheer brilliance. Apart from the awesome technical expertise on display it is only after watching the film that you realise the opening is like an opera overture with all the themes hinted at.

    Orson Welles: self-destructive flawed genius?

He has another 2 to do, the next in 2014. The only reason the gap was so long this time from the last one was the row with MGM etc....
