Have an original vinyl pressing in a sumptious embossed box, listened through completely more than once, and although I've got different bits of the cycle by Knappertsbusch and Furtwangler, my favourite version (also listened to many times) and a little more restrained than Solti, is the great cycle by Karl Bohm.
Some of the "bleeding chunks" # of Wagner must be amongst the greatest music composed. Genius can take many forms but Wagner was unquestionably one; although perhaps not always a very nice man.
# “Defects of form are not a justifiable ground for criticism from listeners who profess to enjoy the bleeding chunks of butcher’s meat chopped from Wagner’s operas.” Donald Tovey 1935
According to the documentry last night it was one of the earliest examples of a stereo LP and many people bought it to show off their new double speaker set up!
I used to have it on CD, but someone nicked it off me during a student house party. A better class of theif obviously attends Russell Group universities.....
