Thread: The Film Reviewer

    Re: The Film Reviewer

    What is all this drivel?

    Actors are cattle.

The script writer is king, a good director is (very) important, no great film ever had a lousy DP and a good editor can save a film but cannot turn dross into gold- and if you notice the music it's probably because the movie is dire.

The reason why Citizen Kane is arguably the greatest film ever made in English (I do not wish to side track into Japanese cinema) is because it had brilliant people performing all of the above five roles. As, of course, everybody knows.

Disagree with you there Graham. The music can be a key part of a film. Just think about The Piano, an excellent film where large parts of it have no dialogue and rely on the fine acting of Harvey Keitel and Holly Hunter and the music. In Peter Greenaway's films the music is as important as the action and you only have to think of all those theme tunes that conjure up visions of film classics to realise how important music is. I do agree that if badly scored or chosen the music can ruin a good film and won't make a bad one any better though.

Don't agree about actors being cattle either. The acting can make or break a film. What's the point of a great script and fantastic direction if your star is wooden and can't deliver?

Agreed Hes. The music in Mamma Mia along with Meryl Streep's dungarees made the film completely brilliant

Liam Neeson can act but he is on his final warning after taking the lead role in 'Taken.' That film will be a stain on his record for eternity.
And lets not forget (err yes maybe we should:thunbdown Taken 2 and the planned Taken 3 (ad nauseum). Nicholas Cage has Francis Ford Coppola for an Uncle, the only reason he got into the excellent film 'Peggy Sue Got Married' (he just made Kathleen Turner look an even better actress than she already was ).

Stop the Press. A brilliant yes brilliant Nicholas Cage film does exist! Kick Ass . His portrayal of Big Daddy was sumblime, especially his croaking and whinging whilst being set alight in the chair scene.

Was Mamma Mia a film? I thought it was mindless, frothy blancmange linking some songs.

I'm sure your comment is partly tongue in cheek Graham coz, as I'm sure you'll agree, a great film is a team event. One of my personal favourites is 'In The Heat Of The Night'. Good script, interesting story that is well shot...but what sticks in the mind is the incendiary interplay between Poitier and Steiger. Without them it may just have been another average 60's pot boiler.

For me it's back a generation to Newman, Redford, McQueen, Eastwood and for the ladies Audrey Hepburn.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is still my favourite film of all time, closely followed by Apocolypse Now.
Apocalypse Now comes in at number 3 on my list. Day of the jackal at 2, and my favourite of all time is The big blue.
Agree on the likes of Newman and McQueen, Caine is high up there too.

Yes I thought they played to his acting strengths there, its dialogue that seems to catch him out
