Thanks very much. I can't do any more until the Garmin site is running again (down since yesterday). Meanwhile I found yet another amazingly helpful article by Rainmaker

I now think some of my problems may be due to an ageing / defective ANT stick. I now realise that the one I have is massively less powerful than the latest version. I have ordered not a new Garmin ANT stick but the Sunto Movestick Mini, which Rainmaker and others say will work with Garmin Connect and Garmin watches. I was about to order from Wiggle, when I noticed it £2 cheaper from Facewest, local to me in Guiseley. Incidentally, there are plenty of Garmin ANT sticks on offer for about the same price, but none of the sites I have visited gives any indication whether one is buying version 1 or 2.

Ive just had an etrex 10 bought for me but not being very technical with these devices my question is can you upload a route or track from memory map onto it? I know it's only a snail trail sort of map on it but just want it as a back up to see how far out we are in bad weather and the like . Wondered if anyone else had one and could tell me if this can be done or if there any good before I open it?

Ok, well got set up with garmin connect...a bit of a struggle but got there eventually. Managed to download my aborted run....the heart rate suddenly returned to normal at the 2 mile point indicating when I stopped. It's a cool device!!

Yes you can. Basically, if you can export from Memory Map in a format that the eTrex likes (.tcx, .gpx) then you can upload it to your device via Garmin BaseCamp. The problem with the eTrex 10 is that it has a limited memory capacity (compared to the 20/30) and a monochrome LCD display, so you can't overlay your track/route onto any kind of mapping. That said, the eTrex 10 zooms down to quite a tight resolution and is fine for basic navigation, it just lacks some of the fancier features of the other eTrex devices.

I relate totally to this. For me, new technology is always a painful struggle followed, with any luck, by joy! After a long battle I have now paired my new footpod with my 310xt, tried it out on a shopping expedition downtown and, after another brief struggle, downloaded the workout to Connect. Even more stats to geek over! I am really glad I invested, as the footpod fills in the gaps where the GPS is unsatisfactory, and vice versa. As for using it off road, I don't see why not as long as it is tucked away under my gaiter. I don't think that should stop it working. I mainly plan to use it indoors and for working on my cadence, which is currently lamentably slow. Some have found the pods inaccurate, but so far mine seems to record distances very similar to those I get by GPS.

Wow! I'd really like to know how many of those stats are directly reporting the state of your body, and how many are just calculated.

well, I have only taken one set of readings so far. it sends an electronis signal through you body. it had my muscle/ fitness at 9 (the top level) fat at 7.3%, hydration at 69% and gave me a metabolic age of 41 which i was dead chuffed with as I am 56. will see as i take more readings whether it is a gimmick or has any real use
