Come on Rasher, back side in to gear.
Bum bag, cheap compass and whistle, water/wind proof top and bottoms, buff and gloves
No more than £40 for the lot then your OK at most races.
All the best in your quest, you have started by finding the forum now get some races done and the bug will bit big style.

For a 10k man the Ian Roberts is a must, will not kill you but will certainly make your sweat and curse, and its local.

    Re: Greetings!

Hi Stagger, Thanks for the info - I have priced up some gear but it comes in way over £40! The compass, whistle and bag (Thanks Truck!) are pretty straightforward. I already have some windproof gloves. The body cover I have got in mind is quite pricey, a Montane top and Inov-8 bottoms - I thought these would be good but if it is a bit too much for category "S" races then I am not sure...

    And what is a buff?

The Ian Roberts looks great, I think I am just getting back up to full distance but it may be a bridge too far, but then again I've got to start somewhere!

    Decisions, decisions!

As far as bottoms is concerned nobody ever wears them so they live in the bag and never come out. Just there for safety and race kit requirement so I would not get too carried away with paying big money for them. Cheap and light is the order of the day.

Ah, I see! I was a bit dubious about searching for them as I am currently at work and didn't want the internet police after me!

Some people wear those things at training, I always wondered what they were - now I know - I shall invest. I have found some really cheap bottoms on Amazon for £10 which are wind / waterproof with taped seams. Winner!

    Thanks very much indeed!

My club (Pennine) had one designed in the club colours so loads of us have them now. I, like you, was not familar with buffs at all, but it has been one of my best purchases ever, they are just so versitile.

A jacket is a different story, a good one make such a difference. But if money is tight I have an Aldi cycling jacket, which is waterproof. A bit bright (being a cycling jacket) but it is brilliant for running. They are a pretty good price at Aldi.

Hey up Rasher! Seeing as you are 'Local'. You may be interested in the Accelerate Gritstone Series http://www.mudsweatandtears.co.uk/20...e-fell-series/ The Gritstone Series website looks like its having some work done but the races could be what you are looking for. Dont be put off by A short races. I am sure you will love em.

    Have fun

Thanks very much - Will investigate!

I have seen a montane windproof which looks quite good, and a "smock" made by OMM which apparently packs down into the size of a golf ball! Will keep doing my homework...

I see that you made the top 50% of the field on the Wincle Trout Race last year. That is a fast little race. Good stuff!
I bet you will be top 15% by the end of the year

Thanks Truck, very kind of you - that was a good but tough introduction to fell running! I'm not sure about making the top 15% though, that would be pretty impressive!
