You'll be fine sevendaughters. Unless you plan to lead the field for the first few miles you'll be able to take a line from the corner of a fence to the trig point (the main nav section) by following other runners across the tussocky bit. Go for it - it's a good un.

Sevendaughters: if you're mid-pack, why worry? There'll be plenty behind you, including me, to steer you in the right direction if need be. Recces are overrated; I'd never bother run a race after a recce, that's just boring repetition.

It's a great race, and you'll be one of only a handful able to locate Plath's grave. That qualifies you as having Local Knowledge.

sevendaughters -You won't have a problem with navigation if you are mid pack.

I was near the back of the pack for last year's race, and managed to hang on to the procession across the main unflagged, flat section of bog, which isn't long after the start, and thus the field hasn't strung out much - and even on the second unflagged section soon after, I still had other runners coming along behind me, even as started to lose touch with the main field - and that section is fairly straightforward anyway.

I usually study the map beforehand,to give me an idea of where I'm going, and take a copy of the map with me in the race, though don't usually have to refer to it.

This is a good, enjoyable race for a first, or only, long fell race - very well organised and marshalled - and well flagged on the flagged bits , which is most of it.

Cheers Skyrun. I'll have a map and the text printout with me. Pretty sure it's just newbie worries. Should probably spend more time worrying about the climbs.

sevendaughters - I was nervous before last year about the unflagged sections - but, as I said, being near the start it was pretty easy to follow everyone else. I usually find that pre-race anxieties are exaggerated when I actually do a race.

Go for it - I'm sure you'll enjoy it and post a great time, and become hooked - well, just to finish is always an achievement as far as I'm concerned.

Agreed - I'm sure you will get round without any bother - for mid-packers the flagging and other runners leading the way should make navigation straight forward - from a safety point of view it is always worth reminding everyone (particularly those new to the sport) to still carry the compulsory map, whistle, and compass (plus other race gear) just in case. You never know what the the weather/injury etc might throw at you. Don't be put off by by the safety requirements -its a great route and an ideal introduction to a long distance fell running for anyone used to running half marathons; if you're not looking to break any records get your fell shoes on and take time to look around at the amazing views. Bring some beer money and enjoy the day! Looking forward to seeing you...

It's the ghost Pipes from BBC1's Ghostwatch - well, the guy who plays him in the make-up. I'm younger and I have more hair and less blood on my face.
