Would people recommend as a good value allround trainer/racer?
Or are the issues with durability just not worth the sub £40?

Wore mine for the first decent distance yesterday. It appears they give me a heel blister on the left foot after 6-7 miles, which made for a fun 7 miles back to the car. Should be avoided in the future with some strategic taping, not ideal, but there you go.
Other than that, they were overkill for the conditions, as it wasn't quite as boggy as I anticipated, but were useable on varied terrains.
.....my local glue/mud managed to fill the treads up several times, though.

Well, for me the fit and feel was fine, the grip was great on the really muddy stuff, but as you can see from the pics I posted the uppers just disintegrated too quickly for them to make sense for me, regardless of the price.
Wondering if I didn't look after them well enough - typically I tend to get my shoes wet and muddy, and if they are lucky they'll get a rinse in a stream or bucket before being stuck in the airing cupboard to dry - perhaps this cycle of wet and dry isn't good for them.
Anyway, I've just replaced them with a pair of Mudclaw 300s which are uncannily similar, albeit at £81. Really hope I get a reasonable mileage out of these![]()
Well, go back over the thread. I think there's enough comments for you to decide for yourself.
For me, they are going to be kept for racing as they are the best shoes I've ever had for grip, feel and overall confidence and comfort.
I'll train in something less able but cheap and long lasting like kanadias
I know, I know...you did warn me.
When my mark 1s failed after 57 runs (53p per run) I thought that was disappointing but jusk about OK in terms of value for money. The Mark 2s are currently on 14 runs and showing no signs of wear as yet - fingers crossed. I have ionly bveen keeping records since I bought the mark 1s but subjectively, compared to previous shoes I don't think they are particularly long-lasting. I always found Walshes were tough but they are not what they were these days (or maybe I'm not what I was...). The shortest-lived pair if shoes I've recently had were a pair of Inov8 Roclite 285 and probably the most long-lasting were Mizuno Wave Harriers. At £50 (if you can get them at that price now) they are probably better value than the Cheviots, but they don't have the grip!
It's pot luck, conditions and foot shape a lot of it though - I've got a pair of 285s that are still going strong after 300 miles, but had a pair of Wave harriers that started falling apart after just 120!
Oo, i think i might give these a go after reading all your comments. I too get fed up at the increasingly maddening cost of mudclaws and salomons!! They seem to be able to price things as they want due to the lack of competition against them. Good on More mile to give it a go and all the best to future developments I say. I've had many pairs of different trainers and found nothing to really last. My speedcross really fell apart after about 10 months! I guess I had done a BG, and a Meirionydd round in them, so I mustn't complain too much![]()
