Just get fit earlier in the season.
Last year I finally hit some form in September / October, much too late. Hence entering the likes of Edale and 3 Peaks this year to force myself to do some early season training

Improve stamina and speed. Lose some more weight without looking like a twig and having to buy smaller clothes.
Have a shave .
