Thread: Strava: FRA club..

If you add a few pairs, and select what you were wearing each time you upload, you get a nice little summary of each shoes millage on your profile page. Only of any use of course if you do log all your miles on strava and shoes are new when you add them!

Interesting - Hardly ridden this year, few longer runs though. Ultra done last w/e so back on bike for a bit of variety. Strava tells me i'm going well, couple of KOMs last week... So Good crossover for bike and hillruns and probably wouldn't have known without computer telling me.

Hi folks. Just joined Strava recently and have joined the FRA club, but how do I get my activities to upload to it? I ran Wormstones last night and can see quite a few others also ran it but I can't see my own run in the FRA Forum section? I uploaded the activity manually as I didn't want to carry my phone with me for the race, not sure if that has anything to do with it? I'm sure I've missed an obvious trick here!

It should be automatic, when you upload. Do they usuallu upload OK when you have the full GPS data?

Ah I see it now. Cheers. It just wasn't showing as me having done the run "with" any of the others that were there. Suppose that may only happen when it has the GPS data to recognise you were in the same place.

Looking forward to seeing what others are up to, especially anyone local to me

Starsky, a friend of mine has the same issue, he just prefers runkeeper on his android phone so manually uploads the data through the Strava import file functionality. When doing it that way he does not get added into the "ran with" grouping. Somehow strava treats it differently.

Thanks for this. I do use the Strava app when I take my phone out on runs / rides but doubt I'll take it for races, so it may be that I never get included in the "ran with" gang :-(

A bit of an update on Strava.....

    Its a bit crap

Well to be fair its not completely crap and trying to improve your times up particular hill climbs is good fun but here's a couple of things it does really badly:

    1. Moving time! The only time that it gives for a run is an arbitrarily calculated moving time and not the actual total time it takes. For short runs there's not so much in it either way I guess but for longer runs the difference can be massive, especially so if a route has ultra steep climbs. The weekend before last I supported Dave Spencer on leg 3 of his BG attempt and it took me approximately 6 hrs and 32 minutes to get from Dunmail to Wasdale. Guess how long Strava gave the moving time as?

4 hrs and 24 minutes!!!! Hahahahaha!

It must have counted every steep climb and especially Lords Rake and the West Wall traverse as me being stationary! The thing is though a couple of people who followed my run on Strava were stunned by my time and really impressed (falsely) but thats not surprising if Strava is knocking 2 hours off

    2. A more minor point admittedly but Strava is also rubbish as a running log in that, if you forget to turn your watch on for a run or accidentally turn it off mid-run, although you can enter the missing distance in as a manually input adjustment, you can't include the lost elevation. So if you're particularly keen on recording elevation, thats too bad

Its for pedal pushers really, lets face it

I was impressed, you shouldnt have given the secret away!

Do you use strava to track from your phone, or do you update from your watch later? Ie is the tracking app doing that or is it strava uploader?
I have the app, but don't use it because of power. I use my 320 for running, and my edge 200 on the bike.

I am looking for an iphone tough case with integral battery extender - can have either but not both as yet.

I've been using the Strava iPhone app to record runs and bike rides for about two years and you can easily get 7+ hours of recording on an iPhone 4. I suspect it would do 8 or 9hrs, but I've not been out that long to test this. I just use a waterproof case. The trouble with rugged cases for touchscreen phones is that there has to be a non-rugged bit over the screen for you to be able to use the phone and as the screen is the most vulnerable bit it makes the ruggedness of the rest of the case a bit pointless. You might as well stick it in a sandwich box with some padding.
