Hoping we won't have Wicken Hill Whizz soundtracked by flood sirens this year..
It was quite atmospheric last year to have the sirens echoing round the valley while the runners were descending, but I'd prefer not to have a repeat!!!

Seems like it's going to be the opposite extreme - came down the WHW descent with last night and we were surprised how rock hard and dry it was. Still no easier than the more normal slithery mud! Still time yet for conditions to change though!

It was pretty atmospheric hearing them from up at the summit while on marshalling duty....

Does anyone know how the hill got the Wicken tag? Sounds like dark forces could be at work up there.....

    Two possibilities:
    1. That it was Viking Hill - perhaps marking an outpost from Viking settlements in Cragg Vale, or even because it overlooked them. The Vikings aren't known to have lived in the Luddenden area.
    2. That it was the site of a cattle station or vaccary, of which there were a number in the area - the surname Wicken can denote a cattle farmer.

    There may be more!

I think Wicken is another name for willow. As in Wicker man, wicker basket etc. Withens is another local name for willow.

Yesterday Charlie B was trying to convince me that Tom Tittiman was originally called Tim Tottyman. I believed him for about 5 mins.
