[QUOTE=DazTheSlug;548795]I usually print out map "fragments" that cover the whole route and mark them up with approximate intended route (!) plus a few choice compass bearings

the Harveys 1:40000 map of the whole Lake District is brill to have with you for emergencies (for both kit-check and use on the hill!)[/QUOTE

Does the fragment printed and marked map (not Harvey/OS original) pass for kit check?

Wouldn't this sort of thing go through the RO? There's a waiting list on the CFRA site so I imagine people would be pretty miffed if they were on that and someone jumped the queue.

Is there likely to be any stream water along the route by Saturday?

    Thanks,

My favourite stream water comes from the gill crossing at the start of the climb to Seatallen, the stream just after the start of the contour round Kirk Fell and the one by the path between Styhead and Esk Hause.

Joss is usually giving out orange squash at Greendale. It's the highlight of the race.

My OL6 explorer map does not cover the full route (missing the last bit to Pillar and onto Great Gable)

What is the best OS map to get that covers this route in full, or will a copy printed from the link given a few thresds back be OK?

    Thanks
Personal opinion is OS maps are no use or ornament for runners. They are too big and bulky, take too long to unfold, but worse than that the covering of steephillsides with rock and crag signage makes them impossible to follow in this kind of territory.

Harvey's west has it all on, which I tend to use as a backup - and is much lighter and smaller, and folds to the size of a coffee mat.
IN general terms IMHO OS maps are better in valley floors and built up, where Harveys are far better on hillsides for getting a quick appreciation of contours.

To save weight and annotate, and what I use as actual racemap, you can photocopy or scan parts of a map and highlight routes and bearings (I do , generally starting with Anquet or that Harveys)

But for the price of a pint you can buy a Pete Bland race map offering which has the coordinates and route marked, and save a lot of weight - order it online , or ring and phone order to make sure they have one, and to make sure of getting it, I can imagine they run out quick on raceday particularly for a championship race.

I've never had DIY fragments turned down at any kit-check (but I always have the Harveys map with me anyway)

    Re: Wasdale

I have been over part route today, mainly Black Sail Pass to Scafell summit. Very hot, no wind, 21 degrees; bring sun cream, forecast is similar I believe. Plenty of good running water just after Black Sail Pass, Beck Head tarn will probably be dry by Saturday, ok for a soak but prob not best to drink from. There is some water on the main descent from Great Gable if you use the tourist path. StyHead tarn is good but a bit out the way. Lots of running water Sty Head to Esk Hause and at Sprinkling Tarn. The last running water I came across today before Scafell Summit was at 227081, just up from Esk Hause at Calf Cove on Explorer map OS6. Nothing after that although there are damp spots on the way to the Lingmell descent, but by that time you prob won't be looking for water. There should be good water to be had up to Scoat Fell from the start, but it will be dry from there to Black Sail Pass, but it's mainly fast and descending so should be ok. Hope this helps, good luck everyone. I have moved from reserve list to full entry today so well pleased.......... Mountain runner aka philclaytonbootlecumbria.

Agree with the above post. I have been running in and around Wasdale for the last couple of days. The streams high up are very weak, and it is very hot even on the summits. Keeping cool will be a priority, if you can't drink it dunk a buff or a hat in it is my advice. Good luck everyone.
