Today's courgettes

In the hills of Radnorshire . That's the middle of Wales!!

Being about 800ft up makes a hell of a difference, also on the side of a valley (rises to about 1100ft above the house) we are quite sheltered and the frosts form and roll down the hill and catch the garden as they go through.

August frosts are quite rare and short lived - but play havoc as nobody expects them, but it's normal to have some in September. June is a bad month for frost and we are lucky if July doesn't hit everything.

Learn to live with them, paranoid weather forecast watching when the veg plants all go out in the spring :w00t:.

definitely the last two courgettes today, 2 butternut squashes and 8 pumpkins. Parsnips and leeks are all that is left

Salvaged one courgette but the frosts have done for the plants now so I'm down to pumkins and butternut squashes, leeks, potatoes and brassicas plus the stored onions and shallots, all the makings of a great soup but that's another thread.

Not doing too badly in the new garden, so far produced 96 courgettes since the end June, not a record but good going :thumbup:

The Missus did 3 large jars of pickled ones (courgette and onion etc.) yesterday, lovely pickle for the winter months

Everything else is doing very well, best ever carrots, starting decent pickings of the runner beans, french beans good, broad beans and peas all finished with plenty in the freezer.

The goddam slugs ate all the buds off of my courgettes this year...I'm spitting feathers over here! I have given up my allotment (due to work/running taking up all my spare time) and have built three veg beds in my garden. I'm now trying to defend them against next door's pesky cat which uses them as giant litter trays and the blooming slugs. I have been enjoying many kilos of raspberries, mangetout, spinach, salad leaves, broad beans, peas and a handful of strawberries and my leeks, runner beans, cabbages and broccoli are coming along nicely. Will have to think of how to protect my courgettes next year.

We've always wanted a courgette glut and have one this year for the first time. Three courgette plants, and between them they're making about 2 a day in this nice weather.

In addition to the normal meals, we do a nice side salad where you peel them into strips with a potato peeler, then add a little lemon juice. Tasty!

Our neighbours cats were the same, the Missus would nearly go into orbit when she saw what they had done some mornings - always where she had just planted seeds etc. My catapult seems to have eased the problem somewhat, I only have to show my face at the window now (maybe it's my face that scares them ) and they are gone, they give our garden a pretty wide berth and they scuttle across the fields past us.

Cats love it when you've just loosened up all the soil for them :thunbdown:

Catapult or water pistol is the way forward (Or a cardboard cutout of moley by the sounds of it!)
