This is what I do, it doesn't take much does it.
On a couple of really hot races last year I ran topless and used insulating tape to stick the number to my chest and stomach. No worries.

I am a RO and sometimes weather depending pin my number to my shorts normally un folded and right across the front of my shorts not on the leg. ive never had a problem in reading no's on shorts at cp's, Scoffer Borrowdale RO / others more often than not runs vestless with his no on his shorts guess he doesn't see it as an issue either. Jebby is sponsored by inov8 to run in his new white inov8 vest, Simon booth often runs vestless Rhys is another of many of the top runners that often run vestless. as I said in the safety rules post 1st man and woman would of been dq'ed under the new rules at Borrowdale this yr under the numbers issue!!!! I suspect there may be the odd "jobsworth" RO'S that may dq runners but on the hole I guess there will be little change, for instance how many times do you see "random kit checks will be made" I run 30 - 40 times a yr and the last time I was randomly checked was at Langdale 2 yrs ago! though some races check at registration.

I often fold one half of my number over but make sure the sponsor is visible once. Also pin on after I've got my bum-bag on so it's not obscured and comfy (and I scrunch it).
Anyway, enough of such fun stuff! Many thanks to the organiser, marshalls etc. for an enjoyable day. I try and say thanks as I go but was pretty head-down from Swirl Howe onwards
Interesting at this race as there I was complying with every rule going and a marshal shouts, what's your number? Your straps are covering it. Hadn't occurred to me before, but my bum bag straps were obscuring some of the number. So there's that to consider as well. And it's not really enough to say make sure your straps aren't over your number as the numbers can be quite big, and with getting gels etc mid-race it can easily get a bit covered even if it wasn't at first.
Just something else to consider along with all the rest of it. Does make you wonder about the fuss being made, though. And surely a number on shorts is better than a number under a waterproof top, which seems to be accepted as far as I can make out.
There's been quite a few references to Jebby at Borrowdale. Who's to say he wasn't being a tad mischievous and smoothing down his number as if to say, 'Can you see it yet, you old rogues?' Just a thought. There's even been reference made to Ricky Lighfoot's shadow! Crikey. Did he stop and stretch out his shorts? Yes, we've reviewed the footage and that's definitely the shadow of a man pulling at his shorts so the marshals can have a good look.

Ah, I was number 134. Presently typing with one hand due to a broken wrist, and I am glad the there isn't a photo of the moment I hit my head on a rock, resulting in a fractured cheekbone. Fortunately it's not as painful as it all sounds, though I'm off to hospital today to see about pinning the wrist. Must pay more attention to where I'm running in future.
