Enjoyed this one although must say rather more road than I anticipated which made it a tad tuff on the feet in my La Sportiva XC's but still enjoyed myself. Finished in 8.30something so not particularly quick but was still fun. Gonna have to start looking around for something with a bit of cushioning in em for these long hard trail affairs.
Big thanks to the organisers and marshals, very impressed with a checkpoint every 3 miles with loads of lovely nanas
It was great to see everyone again on the old route up from Cadster.
Is anyone doing the HP40 this weekend?
Bit apprehensive that my feet may be in tatters by the end. Only suitable shoes I have are 1 arrow roclites, so not a lot of comfy foam to protect my hooves on all the bridle way and road!
Just wanted to check as the gpx file on the site (well the one I download a year or so back) goes across fields and then up Milton lane (tarmac) on the way to Eccles Pike, whereas the route description indicates that you cut down the lane by the houses at Cadster, and then diagonally across the fields to Ollrenshaw farm, and then onto the tarmac up to the pike. Is it the latter? My gpx file could be out of date tho!Originally Posted by Marvin
I was out having a little mooch around that bit last night and the Cadster>field option is much better than the field>road option. I did notice a high peak bourgh planning notice at the top of the little Cadster lane bit but didn't really stop to read it much!
EDIT: OK, so I have managed to download the gpx file from the website and the one I had is out of date for the section around Cadster. So ignore all the stuff above about which way to go. Got it now!

everyone goes on about this one being hard on the feet but I don't really know what the fuss is about. Might just be me and my feet/joints but I had no problem. You could get away with road shoes, especially given the current conditions underfoot which are dry.
I'll be there on Saturday - can't advise on route or choice of footwear as I've not recce'd any part of the route, but I quite like having to check the map all the way round, it tends to take my mind off the pain I'm in.
Had a good run out around the peak on Saturday. Conditions were pretty good - a ittle drizzle to start and a bit claggy going over Lords Seat and Mam Tor, which partially obscured the view down edale valley. As per expectation I went too fast over the first half, and then flagged a bit after cave dale. The road down to tideswell was initially a relief but soon became a very long drag, but not as long as the drag along Flagg lane!
Very well organised race, loads of signage all round the course (but not to be confused with the arrows for the mtn bike event that someone followed down into Edale!). Way too much road for my liking (but then it doesn't pretend to be a fell race, so that's what I should expect).
Great selection of cakes at the end, and lovely cup of tea.
Another great HP40, & at least I finished this year. Good time too - 7:25, which I think is 15 mins outside my pb. That last road section from CP10 was murder though! The race results aren't up yet, but I've already got them from Bill so the Runfurther leaderboard has been updated, and there's a report from me & a link to Nick Ham's photos on the runfurther.com website. Nigel Aston's report will be added soon too, once he's sent it on.
Thanks Andy for the quick report, results and linking service. This is one of my favourites. It was my 15th time. I went into it at max expectation as usual, hoping for only my 4th sub-8-hour finish. When I got to Tideswell Dale 15 mins slower than I did in 2013 (the 'race within a race' year) I realised it was a long shot. I continued to beast myself to the limit, including running every step from High Low to Deep Dale 2 descent, and was pleased in the end to get in just under 8:15. If I'd let my foot off the gas at all it would have been more like 8:30.
I spoke to Marcus Scotney afterwards. He said he ran every step of the way, then qualified it - 'well, not all of the Deep Dale 2 ascent'. I suppose he'd have to with a 5:20 winning time. Incredible.

but seems to be a lot better today... HOORAH!
so, sod it, I'll be toeing the line in the Pavilion Gardens on Saturday morning
