I particularly like the final line of CL's post.

As rules become more prescriptive the more they encourage not thinking and blindly following and in my opinion/experience that could place runners and RO's in greater danger than carefully worded but less prescriptive guidance.
This is all well and good.. but these rule changes are in response to a death and coroners report.. I've not seen the report but if they are stating as it is is insufficient and the FRA take the liberal approach and another death happens the sport will be in a bad situation.

It's a long thread, so perhaps you haven't read it properly, but I haven't suggested that, and I don't think AI has.

Just a brief overview would negate the need for some of the wording in the ROs paperwork that has caused concern.

Here's a good one and on point
"Must not allow equipment that restricts hearing but do have discretion to allow “walking poles”.
Does this mean we have to tell runners they have to carry but cannot wear a hat or hood as these are not allowed?????

Yes I know it means headphones - but that's not what it says

There is something very dispiriting about this thread; thank God the vast majority of fell runners won't have seen it. It appears to be about five people talking to each other about arcane matters, mind you that is the forum in general I suppose.

It won't be long before we can dispense with the FRA, if you can organise the Arab spring on Twitter I'm sure we could manage a trot in the countryside. There would be no need for a RO just an agreed start place and time and everyone carries their GPS phone over an agreed course with 'find my friends' activated. When/if you get home you can log on and see how you did.

Mind you it wouldn't be long before there was a main organiser who would take too much on and then ask his or her mates to help and form a committee who would then need another bunch who would heroically volunteer to rush out if someone appeared to be still on the course. Then they would need a main organiser, then we would need to raise funds...

Is it time for this "thread" (rope) to be put somewhere else? It IS a very important topic to debate and discuss but 128 pages for a newcomer to sift through is all but nigh impossible. I find it hard to get to the nitty-gritty of the thread's title. Don't SHOUT at me please.....

    Haha, fantastic

My problem with this thread is that all the great points were made yonks ago and can be easily listed in three bullet points. Everyone and their donkey could have left it there but, for some unearthly reason a) some people keep disputing those points and b) fricking AI (sorry Mike ) keeps fricking explaining them.

I was trying my hardest not to even post on here ever again and hoping like mad that everyone else would stop too, as each and every post kicks off another response and stops the thread from dying.

So.... no need to reply to this

Can't someone bullet point the main points on a new thread. Just tell me what I need to do and take at my next winter fell race. Has it change that much in a year?

The New Safety Rules are .................?

pointing out the obvious.. but no runners don't need to look.. I looked out of interest, but for runners little has changed. Its for the Wynn et als that this matters... ooh a little bit of Latin thrown in.. Graham will love that!

You are right though, we can form new groups, leave the FRA, leave UKA.. but its still the same shit in a few years.. Ignoring any threat of legal action or changes in the demographics of runners is head in sand time.
