I used to live with a Bolton fan. He used to talk about being a big club because they won things a long time ago.
For me history doesn't really come into it. I think size of club is based on: fan base, how much money they've got [sorry Carlos - I know you won't like this one], 5-year history, strength of sqaud, and most importantly league position.
Anyone care to add to this?
To a point but history is a factor...
Juve are a big club, regardless of success, which has been limited. Likewise Man U and Liverpool..
It is slightly self-fulfilling because clubs of their stature attract investment. But there are still 5 or so teams in the world who have that stature and legendary status. As much as I dislike Liverpool and they've had 20 years of limited success they are still a big club. Likewise United in the 80's... or now.. :-)
Leeds won their limited trophies with a relatively small team and budget, they lost out on a fair few trophies due to end of season fatigue, their success in multiple competitiond hampering them. Most of the 'Dirty Leeds' stuff is pretty much b***ocks, Leeds were no more dirty than 90% of sixties and seventies teams. Look at the Leeds v Chelsea Cup Final!! Leeds were cheated out of least one European Cup by the corrupt Greek referee, a fact which has been pretty much confirmed though never acknowledged. The 'scum' are doing ok, fiddling around in the Championship and I doubt we'll ever get close to the top of the Premiership again in my life time. Ho hum.
Oh! And as for us being a 'big club'. We're not really anymore....
I didn't have you down as that well aged Richard!!![]()
