The Rombalds Stride is an LDWA Challenge Event in which walkers and runners are invited to complete a 23 mile route in anything up to 10 hours. It's not a race. If you complete in under 3 hours, you complete the challenge, if you complete in 9hrs 59mins, you complete the challenge (and, in fact, some would say you deserve far more respect for having been out that long).
The Rombalds is not and never has been organised by the LDWA. You can walk it if you want but there is plenty of racing going on and a table full of trophies for the fastest in various categories.

Good luck with your first race when you go to one though, glad you enjoyed yourself at Rombalds.
Untill Rombalds I have exclusively run on my own up on the tops away from crowds and people. This was the first time where I had to register, have a number, clock checkpoints and compete against others. It may not be an official FRA race but to me it was a "fell race". Any way the point is I loved it and I was impressed with what you got for the entrance fee and the all round nature of it. Thanks Jez, I hope to do more 😄.

Pies WERE great (even the veggie ones, apparently). Momento was one of those mugs that keep your drink hot for when you get to fell races too early. You should have been there Andy.

There certainly seemed to be plenty of racing going on, there were published "winners". So if it looks like a duck and quacks, it's probably a duck...

Excellent, sounds like you had a cracking day. That's the beauty of LDWA events and why they should be protected, at all costs, from the "racing" mentality. What you get for the fee is astonishing and, as you say, the all round nature of it is so special....precisely because it's not a race but a challenge for people of all abilities. You meet such wonderful people, who inspire you and show you that you need not reduce your distances as you get older, just adjust your speed!

I really appreciate you posting that in support of, and as clear evidence of, my correct assertion ;-) Since the "challenge" is to complete the distance within a set time (10 hours in this case), then it's clearly not a race. Excellent, I like being proved right.
