Possibly half way round near Turton Reservoir, streams running into it. some of which will be fairly large and OK I think.Might be easier if you go on the old route along side the res rather than past the strawberry duck etc
If you get really desperate after Darwen Tower vary the route to top down to pub and visitor centre slightly further north than where you cross the road at Slipper Lowe on entry into Roddlesworth woods. Once you get over Great Hill and down to White coppice you should kind some streams especially as you go near some of the reservoirs

I have just downloaded the route (memory map file mmo) from the LDWA site and it does not match the route description. Is the only change to the route from Turton reservoir to Slipper Lowe via Darwen Tower?

The only change I know of , compared to quite a few years ago now is when you get to Turton res. cross dam, past CP and food on track past pub upto road near Cadshaw. many years ago it used to go along side the reservoir instead.

the route looks good - quite fancy getting up onto Winter Hill and Darwen Tower
however, I'd prefer not to have to enter in advance, as weather might be sh!te on the day

so I'm thinking I might just go round on my own on the Sunday (weather permitting!)
don't have to start quite so early then either
There is a fast running stream on the white coppice side of great hill, a trickle just past hollinsworth hall if you are desperate! I sometimes drop a bottle at the road crossing there

You are making me keen! I would trot round with you (I did it a couple of times years ago..came in the first couple , dont times change) but am heading for the sun tomorrow.

Now I think on it there are two other sources:

First can be a trickle (or it can gush, and might be after all this rain) About half way up Great Hill you cross a small water course just before some made up steps. The only problem with that moorland (other than mud) is a few sheep. So maybe sterilizer tabs needed.

Then on the way down after the gate on the cobbled road before you turn left in a coppice of trees by a flattened building.. on the RHS there used to be a water source (I recollect as a tap or siphon or similar) although is a couple of years since I saw it (or looked for it or used it). Don't know if it is still there. Coppice is though. See it on google earth about 800m W of the summit.

shhh.....If you know where to go, you can actually cut off a corner running down close the bank of A stream left of the cobbled road and all the way to the white coppice end and get a drink. Would not try it on spec though!

All this talk about getting up early, wanting a drink half way round, are there streams, are there burger bars en route - what is the matter with you lot. when I were a lad we just went and did it. And this before forums existed. How on earth did we manage to survive?

pottered round this today in about 5 1/2 hrs
    lovely route
very wet underfoot though - lots of splodging through boggy areas and sliding on mud
clagged in on Winter Hill early on, hail showers on way up to Darwen Tower (which I'd never been up to before, and didn't realise you could actually go up the spiral stairs inside - very windy on top though!)
sky cleared to blue on way up to Great Hill (found spring - thanks ai) and the trot in from White Coppice past the various reservoirs was glorious

hope everybody has a good day tomorrow

Glad you had a good trot round the route, Daz.

Karen, good to see you on Sat, and well done getting round in such respectable time despite the Achilles. The wind was a bit strong on Great Hill, wasn't it? I had trouble keeping on my feet. It msut have been even worse later on for the walkers.

Good to see you too, Ian.

    I've posted a few pictures.
