I just wonder how many people would have voted UKIP, as a protest or any other, if they'd realised that they were voting under PR rather than first passed the post and a local candidate. To be absolutely honest I'd forgotten though I didn't commit a protest vote.

Just tried to establish exactly what system I voted under!!....I've no idea, and if I did have an idea I'm not sure I would entirely understand it!

Just found this gem in the BNP thread:

I was chatting to a local Labour councillor last weekend. He was of the opinion that the BNP and voters of are c*nts. When asked why, he said that they are racists and their politics don't count for sh*t.

I challenged him by reminding him of the flavour of the month Diversity Policy that all councils push if you go for a job there, and that no-one should be castigated for political , religious, personal etc beliefs, to which he replied that 'It doesn't count for those shites.'

Pushing the issue, I asked about the voting and was told that the people who voted for BNP should 'Have been told to vote Labour because lalalalalalalabolloxbolloxblah, as BNP are all scum'.

Asked about the democratic right to vote that this country is proud to hold, he informed me that 'If anyone votes BNP, they do not deserve to live in a Democracy. They should be thrown out. If people do not listen to us and waste their vote, they should be told how to vote.'

When I reminded him that this is how facism starts, he threw a hissyfit and buggered off.

Why I don't like left wing/right wing is the way it is portrayed in the likes of Danberts mind as left wing = fair-minded, kind, generous but right wing is nasty, selfish, racist, homophobic.

Absolutely. I think it's up to sensible right-wing people to make it clear that this isn't the case.

In the same way that it's hard to label people's views in two words, UKIP voters aren't all the same. Some will be people who see the power of Europe becoming too great. There will be some libertarian anti-federalists. Some will be anti-EU ex-conservative voters who see this as a defining policy. There will also be some people who don't want foreigners doing jobs that they believe people from the UK could and should be trained to do. Some are protest voters, and some (probably a very small proportion) are racists who see this as a defining policy.

To paint them all as being like the very small minority who would support overtly racist laws is like painting labour voters as supporting renationalisation of all industry.
