Thanks for the reply dcglim. I think I responded badly to the pejorative term "self-inflicted" which you used twice. It just has overtones of condescension to me, but I accept that that's not how you intended it, so I apologise.

Yes, I have had bad experiences with pretty poor doctors in the past (but by no means all - some superb as well). It's particularly upsetting when you see those you love receiving poor care.
