Thread: Three Peaks Fell Race

I fancy this next year as a target to train over the winter and I don't fancy doing a road marsthon.

Something like an x-talon 212 or a Roclite sounds ideal for this then?

I'd have absolutely no idea what kind of pace to run the sections between the climbs though, total unknown entity. Start off slow would be wise as ever I guess, lol

Sounds and looks like a monster especially the last climb.

That last climb certainly finishes me off, I've usually bonked by then and just manage to dig in going up and something resembling a shuffle on the long run downhill back to Horton. This race always wipes me out but the pain soon goes, and I always end up going back for more.

I have only done it once, a lot of years ago, but if I were to revisit (I really should) I would try and keep an intensity just below that of a flat road marathon. The ideal shoe would have decent grip and some cushioning. Not sure road shoes would be that advantageous, but light is always good to make the turnover feel quick.

Unless you are front end and chasing seconds, the old Mizuno Wave Harrier has proved popular with mid pack and tail end runners. It strikes a good balance between cushioning and grip.
Nike Triax is OK, perhaps not enough grip in parts, but a little better than road.
I'll be in Salomon Speedcross for the first time this year.

Felllrunner09 - pacing is very important. Most 4 hour runners make the mistake in their first race of pushing too hard on PYG, especially the descent which is really inviting, and then the cross country to Ribblehead.
It's easy to blow it by Ribblehead for the sake of getting there a few minutes quicker.

Been round the 3 Peaks three times so far this year - January, February and March - and I can definitely confirm that at no time would road shoes have been any good at all. That said April is often very dry in Ribblesdale and the track could well dry out a lot in time for race day.

Stolly, I assume it's best suited to fell shoes at the moment. Do you reckon it's likely to be better suited to trail shoes if we have a dry 17 days?

I've done the 3 Peaks twice, once there was snow on the tops, the second time it was a heatwave.

Shoe wise, the first time I wore Walshes and had really painful feet coming off Ingleborough - do not underestimate how far it is to Horton from the summit! The second time I had a trail shoe with some padding. There isn't much "soft" ground on the route and your feet take quite a pounding, even when you are on the grassy bits there's rock not far beneath the surface.

thanks Bob. I've done it the last three years wearing trail shoes (saucony peregrine) each time and they've been a good choice. I agree with you - the amount of road and hard packed trail probably sways it over any boggy sections calling for fell shoes, I'd say.
