[QUOTE=Damian Kimmins;631651]That's not a truth, that's a supposition based on the guilt of just a handful of athletes! And a handful of athletes among tens of thousands of them at that![/QUOTE

Ha ha ha Cycling? Athletes Russia and US with Nike project?

Oh the handful tend to be winners and in pro sports that is all that counts.

Just on the cycling; how many have been proven to have cheated, in the last 10 years say?

All this time, energy and effort directed to something not about life and death. What a waste.
Simple answer? Ban professionalism. Only allow records to be set by true amateurs. If not, and money is allowed in, then open the floodgates and let it be a free for all. May the best cheat win!...........and pay for it with their life later on. Like Flo Jo.

Spot on Simon; as amateurs let us just enjoy being true sportsmen ........ leave the "racing prostitutes" (professionals) to commit suicide in which ever way they choose. They are not worth bothering about. Stop idolising them and turning them into 'heroes'.

The "wheezers" (both Monmouth and Bowland versions) have got the right idea.

"Professional sport" is a contradiction in terms. I have no objection to people using their athletic abilities to earn their living; but they are professional entertainers, not sportsmen/women.

It is true that our present ideal of amateur sport is largely a 19th-century invention, probably arising because of the increase of repetitive factory jobs and sedentary clerical work at that time, which left people wanting physical recreation in the open air. But I still think it is an excellent ideal (and not just because I am a member of a 19th-century running club!).
