Back in my Sport Science days before physio, we researched the effect of caffeine on performance endurance, I was a 'blind' subject to the fluids I was given, turns out I was taking the decaf coca-cola first, followed by the full fat coke the following week....I cycled a further 2km on the ergo over 30 mins with the full caff coke than the decaf, apparantly it aids in releasing fat cells (therefore additional energy), but is most effective in those who do not regularly drink/consume caffeine, so perhaps staying off the coffee may improve your times?!
No pain no gain...if still no gain try more painkillers!
