Apologies for going 'off thread' but seeing the title 'First Steps near Rochdale' has me giggling in a morbid sort of way.
Only this weekend a group of us that were apprentices together (way back in the late '60s) have just been informed of the demise of an ex colleague.
He was maybe 10 years older than us and around autumn of 1970 he left the company to join Lancashire Constabulary. His first shift was walking the beat, round and around the square in front of Rochdale town hall, freezing his nads off. Hence 'First Steps near (in) Rochdale' strikes an amusing chord!
