    It's a fair point.

This is quite an interesting article.

It makes the distinction between arithmetic density and "lived/built up" density. Spain on the face of it is quite sparsely populated but only 13% of Spain is actually lived in. So where people do congregate they are quite tightly packed.

Whatever measure you use, if you look at the table at the bottom England is one of the most densely populated countries in Europe.

I agree UK roads are too busy. And you're right the UK government is too focused on London. What we need is some sort of organisation that has the ability to fund public transport in our regions.

Anyone care to google "EU funding tram network"?

Sounds good. Where does this organisation get its funding from?

That's a good point Muddy. If I were convinced our own government had a plan for the regions I wouldn't be concerned. As I said, most UK government transport infrastructure money is spent on people in the South East.

Not that I care that much, but it is crazy how much of Goverement Arts spending is concentrated in London

The 'Birmingham Tram' appears to have been an absolute farce and a bit of a con (purely in my view).

There was already a metro/tram line from Snow Hill Station out through the Jewellery Quarter, West Bromwich, nearly to Wolverhampton.

The 'new' line is effectively the same thing, except a minor extension to start outside of New Street Station instead.

My understanding is that Birmingham had to have a tram system in order to qualify for some king of funding or award, and this got the city around that particular issue.

I understand that Birmingham will be introducing a congestion charge in the coming few years...
