Surely burning the wood releases its carbon to the atmosphere. Why not keep warm by digging a hole and burying it, thus trapping the carbon deep underground.

But the oxygen it gave out whilst alive cancels out the carbon emmited from burning which is why it is deemed a carbon neutral source. To go a step further, you can obtain from an FSC accredited supplier who will re-plant the amount you buy thus sustaining the cycle.
