If you flip it, it would have seemed odd to say "as from Thursday...." as then you'd have had people asking what has changed since Tuesday or Wednesday.

Overall, I was disappointed. I think the speech missed two elements of clarity.

    1. Dates fixed for schools. That would have then tied in with the back to work message.

    2. Family visits. Based on what Boris said yesterday, the wife and I can get in the car at 5 am, drive up to Fort William, pop up the Ben, nip in to Morrisons at Fort William, back home, stop off at Cairn Lodge on our way back.....
But we can't have any of the grandkids round for a visit, despite all family being locked down for 8 weeks now.

I also thought the comment on fines was wrong.
Scafell maybe, but I don't think that you can drive to the Ben.

Indeed. Sturgeon will shoot you at the border!😂
As to the press response? Jeez!! How do I avoid their carping negativity?? Ive said it before but the press behaviour is by far the worst aspect of this for me!

    Sturgeon? Carping?

This thread appears to have been hijacked by the fishing activists.

I'm sure the press are sharpening their pencils for a week reporting on people saying how unfair it is they can't do this or that in Scotland or wales and what does "stay alert" mean and finding one person where the England/Wales boundary goes through their garden and Boris forgot to mention them. So on and so forth.
But all that aside, we shall carry on here for another 3 weeks, not stress and see how it pans out elsewhere. Personally I would like to have a little freedom and feel relatively safe by August, maybe earlier? Playing the long game and not getting worked up about what others are doing. Though the press are the pits like Wheeze says.

Keir Starmer whinging about the different measures in England compared to those taken by the devolved Governments of Wales and Scotland.

Has he forgotten that it was his party that pushed through devolution on a minority vote of the populations!

    From the ONS:

"Compared with the rate among people of the same sex and age in England and Wales, men working in the lowest skilled occupations had the highest rate of death involving COVID-19, with 21.4 deaths per 100,000 males (225 deaths); men working as security guards had one of the highest rates, with 45.7 deaths per 100,000 (63 deaths).
Men and women working in social care, a group including care workers and home carers, both had significantly raised rates of death involving COVID-19, with rates of 23.4 deaths per 100,000 males (45 deaths) and 9.6 deaths per 100,000 females (86 deaths).
Healthcare workers, including those with jobs such as doctors and nurses, were not found to have higher rates of death involving COVID-19 when compared with the rate among those whose death involved COVID-19 of the same age and sex in the general population.
Among men, a number of other specific occupations were found to have raised rates of death involving COVID-19, including: taxi drivers and chauffeurs (36.4 deaths per 100,000); bus and coach drivers (26.4 deaths per 100,000); chefs (35.9 deaths per 100,000); and sales and retail assistants (19.8 deaths per 100,000)."

Men have twice the Covid related death rate of women - 10 vs 5 per 100,000. The above figures are adjusted for age, but not, for example for ethnicity.

    a complete dog's breakfast.

I note Sturgeon has asked that the UK Govt advise is not broadcast in Scotland.

I personally think her behaviour appalling. She's given a seat at key meetings, briefed by the lead experts, and then runs off and sets up a press conference to get the info out before the PM.

Now she's going her own way.

If only we could block her being broadcast down here as I've had a gutful of switching Sky or BBC on and seeing here little head bobbing about talking bollocks.

Sturgeon in her press conference now.

The R number is still too high.

    What is it?

    I don't know.

Even When it is cold and miserable we ride past fishermen on the canal towpath who have faces like a wet weekend. I assume they prefer it to being home, so they are socially distancing the wife and kids!

It’s comforting to know that the world is its usual self. What can be more normal than teachers unions whinging again about anything and everything. This case about going back to work. If you gave them 52 weeks off, they still would find something to grumble about. Probably the “ stress “ of being off for so long.

Stress is a serious issue that will rear its head. It is rarely commented , and stats are hard to come by, but entrepreneurs ( not doctors or teachers) have a massive suicide rate. We all know some that have been pushed over the edge.

Now government has taken the easy way out and made business pay 100 percent for corona virus, not a discernible penny from the public sector, ( the unions would whinge to kingdom come) there will now be a massive wave of business collapses ( many of them out of sheer spite not logic , like Virgin) and with it a wave of entrepreneur suicides. They will go largely unreported. They are after all, public enemy number 1: parasites in our twisted world of values.

They are the most useful people in the economy, because without them there is no money for anything. But nobody will clap for them, despite the fact of that their paying for corona will last for years. The day they finally make a profit, they will be branded parasites again. Ignoring the fact they pay for it all. Not to mention the devastation of equities which will force many businesses to be asked to top up pension schemes.

That was the most unfair legislation in history, when brown made business responsible for how his government trashed return in the economy.
