Couple of days fishing on the Severn, all sorts of wildlife, oystercatcher, plover, Reed buntings, egrets, Kingfishers, fallow deer, sand Martin's and many more. Missus caught a ruffe first she has ever seen or caught, interesting little fellow and I've never caught one either in 60 years.
    The end is nigh

A friend has been camping in Dorset and sent me a picture of his mate's foot... he'd been bitten on the foot by something (they are assuming it may have been a false-widow spider in his shoe).... his foot had swollen to double the size, bright red, and a horrific yellow blister on top... hospital visit and anti-biotics required.

Really was a grim photo. I suggested it may have been an allergic reaction to an adder bite, but they think they might have noticed that at the time!

I remember knowing them as ruffe or pope, probably from Observer book of freshwater fish. The Observer books were our Wikipedia .
But never came across them, perhaps the are more common up north, but then I've never caught a burbot either - nor likely to .

Apparently it is very edible, so never mind using it as bait, catch 100 and there is Friday night scampi and chips (for one).
