A previous episode on eating beetroot is worth a listen. I take a shot every morning - it tastes grim but it is only a couple of mouthfuls. One of its proponents is Prof. Andy Jones, himself a runner - andybeetroot on Twitter - who has kindly answered a couple of my questions over the years. One thing to know is that mouthwashes that contain anti-bacterials stop beetroot from working.

I also heard that episode Mike, and as an avid fan of beetroot it was gratifying to know. I grow quite a bit of beetroot too, but not enough to last the whole year and so have to revert to buying those vacuum packed (long life) products you can buy in most supermarkets. The thing is, I'm not sure how the packed beetroot is prepared and wonder whether its potency is 'boiled-out' somehow. i also tend to pickle my beetroot for longer storage and again I wonder if the vinegar nullifies the beneficial effect.

I stopped using anti-bacteria mouthwashes years ago when I read that they also wipe out the 'good' bacteria related to cardio-vascular health https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/326259.

Regarding the health advice given in previous Michael Moseley's episodes, I now cold-shower every morning (you get use to it remarkably quickly); do daily press-ups (which Ive done for years); and stand rather than sit when reading/using the Mac, etc. I've tried incorporating 'mindfulness' 10 mins a day, but have less success at that in terms of setting side enough time I've been learning a new foreign language, daily, as another means to stimulate the the aging grey-matter in different ways other than just reading and Wordle!

So it must work - or why would you?

I take tincture of turmeric every day (for my knees) because my osteopath swears it does good - and it tastes much worse than beetroot juice - so I have to believe him.

After ducking out of club training on tuesday to rest (in fact having that rarest of things... a full rest day!)

I did a bit of a session this morning.... 10 x 400mtr efforts with 2mins30 steady run between....

They weren't full pelt, in fact i didn't even time the reps... was just to get my legs ticking over in a last-ditch attempt not to embarrass myself on saturday.

Not feeling in good track form at the moment (which is strange, because i'm feeling great on the fells).... i won't go down without a fight on saturday, especially with about half the field being my own clubmates... but realistically i'd just like to keep under 11mins and move on...

Although on the subject of which witch doctor one believes...

My osteopath also swears by glucosamine but my knee surgeon on hearing I took this said, somewhat brusquely, "waste of money. Use the money for a holiday instead. It'll do you more good".

So I stopped and indeed subsequently had some very successful years of fell running.

But who knows, if I had continued taking it...?

I'm a great believer in placebos (is there some sort of obscure, twisted tautology in that last statement? ), but in the absence of clear, empirical evidence (which let's face it is also usually group/cohort empiricism rather than an individual bod's experience)which supports or rejects, then I'd stick with what I feel works for me. If only they could distill all the quack. faux, remedies down into one mouthful or dose of something. Hey, wait a minute...there could be! SARDINES IN BEETROOT SAUCE-yummy. A gap in the market methinks...

On beetroot: in my childhood I was sometimes given pickled beetroot (and expected to eat it all). I believe that the punishment should fit the crime: the inventor of pickled beetroot should be suspended in vinegar until his flesh becomes flabby and tasteless.

Anyway, I avoided beetroot after that, but in more recent years I have been having a weekly organic veg box from Riverford, which has occasionally included beetroot. I have discovered that it is entirely acceptable in moderate amounts if eaten raw. In fact I can even accept having the cucumber and lettuce in a salad being stained purple by the inclusion of beetroot. It's still not one of my more favoured vegetables, and I've never tried doping myself with it before a race; but I no longer find it objectionable.

I reckon if you use mouthwash in the evening before bed, you'll be OK.

I can remember a pharmacologist talking about glucosamine at a meeting I went to - the only studies that showed benefit were those that had been funded by the manufacturers. You saved some hard earned money.

I only ever have "cold" showers now - helped by the fact that our shower mixer does not let the water remain completely cold. Those first 5 seconds are still a bit of a shock to the system.
