Thanks to a very helpful contributor on the Garmin developer forum, here’s what I was looking for: a way to get my Fenix to display the percentage of the Naismith time for the route covered so far. I’ve tested and it works.

So this calculates the Naismith % based on the distance/ascent *already* travelled, and not the *total* distance/ascent for the entire course.

    1) Install Appbuilder 5 on your Garmin watch from the Garmin ConnectIQ app using a smartphone. It’s at this link:

    https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/f...e-3b7f39aa67c5

This will create a data field on your Garmin watch which you can edit and use in any app on the watch. I think it works for most Garmin watches - mine’s a Fenix 3.

    2) Use the following settings:

Label: N Factor (or whatever you want)

    Formula: (timer / 3600) / ((distance_raw / 1000) / 4.83 + totalascent_raw / 610)

NB this is based on the metric equivalent of 3 mph horizontal speed and 2000ft/hr vertical; it will work whether your watch is using feet or metres. You can edit the metric figures to whatever you want.

I’m going to test using it to set my pace in the early part of some long efforts this season. Something I need, like many men (there seems to be a gender difference whereby women are less prone to set off at an unrealistic pace!).
