Getting around Mid Wales at the moment is a nightmare as I found out last weekend.

I left Abergynolwyn and thought I'd take the scenic route home to Llani via Corris, Machynlleth and Staylittle but when I got to Mach the road to Staylittle was closed at Dylife and the diversion sent me around to Llanbrynmair and on to Staylittle via Llan. What a palaver!

I have since been told that the road wasn't really closed at Dylife but the council are "pretending" it is to stop lorries and a large volume of other traffic using the mountain road to avoid the nearly 70 mile diversion via Welshpool to get to Mach now that the A470 is closed at Talerddig.

I can imagine that is the case Llani. Wonderful road but could not handle high volumes.

Any road closed in mid wales results in a total nightmare of a detour, unless you have a 4x4 and intimate knowledge of forestry detours .
Talerddig bakery supplied everywhere locally and sorry to hear it has gone. But sneaking the Masters Lounge onto the old premises, somewhat under the radar, hence avoiding business rates, council taxes and insurance, tapping into the electric was genius 👍.
Might sneak in for a pint tomorrow, spent today sat on back of a farmer friends quad bike charging about the hills, a bit sore!

The crimson feline is presumably the Red Lion. An ancient city to the north of Talerddig? The cathedral city of Llanelwy (St Asaph)?

You are barking up the right tree AK but I think I've cracked the secret location and it is much nearer to Talerddig.

I reckon its Y Llew Coch (The Red Lion) in Dinas Mawddwy.

Dinas is Welsh for city.

The Red Lion, along with the Bluebell and The Star Inn form a chain of much loved redoubts for mischief in the hills!

The Red Lion is still going strong although very different from 45 years ago when my Mum and Dad used to visit from Llani for the Saturday night singsong and chicken in a basket!

The Bluebell is still going but its welcome and quality of beer/food varies.

The Star, another singsong venue from the 60s/70s/80s, is now closed. It did reopen a few years ago as a walkers/mountain bikers bunkhouse and bar but I'm told Covid finished it off.

Another watering hole in that neck of the woods that you have no doubt frequented Wheeze is The George Borrow Hotel in Ponterwyd.

I recall one weekend we were on exercise in the area and were staying in the hut at Maesnant, below Pumlumon.
We had gone to the George Borrow early evening and spent most of the evening watching the coverage of The Herald of Free Enterprise disaster. When we went to leave around 1am we found that we were snowed in so we stayed and watched more of the TV coverage.

We eventually trudged back up to Maesnant and after breakfast had a great, beer sweating day on Pumlumon.
